Peg Board Bay Door Strut

I had to detach one of my peg board bay door struts to complete a compartment modification. The piston is now fully extended and requires an incredible amount of pressure to retract it for reinstallation. Is there a trick to this procedure?

Thanks,

Jigs

I modified mine and had the same problem. I used a ratchet strap to pull it in.

Once I figured out how to separate the strut from the ball bracket base, I was able to muscle it back in place.
Thank you for your replies.

I was also doing maintenance in the peg bay this weekend and had to remove one of the door gas struts for access.

On my 2016 DSDP 4369, the peg bay door opens to two positions.

Horizontal for when the slide above is out and to almost vertical for when the slide above is closed.

When the door is open to the almost vertical position, the piston is fully extended and does not require any pressure or force to either remove or reinstall the strut. I disconnect it from the coach and leave it hanging on the door and then swing it back into position and bolt it back in when I am complete.

I owned my coach for six months before I realized the peg bay door opened above the horizontal position.

Newmar must have made a modification for the 2016 model year. I would be ecstatic if my door opened beyond the horizontal position.

My compartment modification included replacing the peg board with 3/4" plywood. For me, the peg board was not that practical. I store my Tele-Steps ladder in this compartment, saving valuable storage space in the basement. Although the ladder is easily accessed from this compartment, it is quite heavy, and the door in the horizontal position makes it rather awkward.

Jigsup, I also have a 2 position door on my 2015 VTDP. After the door stops at the first position, a slight finger pressure in the upward direction takes the door to the second position (i.e., opened beyond horizontal).

BTW...nice mod.

You and Tom were both right! It took a bit more manual pressure than I had applied in the past; but low-and-behold, it does indeed extend past the initial horizontal stop point. Also, I have never attempted to open it with the bedroom slide retracted. This is a huge benefit I never knew existed. A perfect example of how iRV2 is such a great resource to share with and learn from one another.

Thanks guys!

It was an 'a hah' moment for me when I realized the door opened more than 90 degrees. My back has thanked me ever since.

Nice trick to get your coach upside down for the thread cover pic!
