Penguin heat pump problem
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and I have a problem with my ac/heat pump that hope someone can help with. I set the front ac in hp mode and the unit will heat fine for hours and then it start blowing cold air in ac mode. The only way that I can get it to work in hp mode is to switch it to ac for a couple of cycles and then back to hp mode and everything is fine until it decides to blow cold air again.
I've reset the thermostat, checked the coil on the reversing valve, I've even called Duo-Therm and they never heard of an ac/hp acting this way. I hope someone can help.

Good morning Newmar2004; I am going to try to answer you question, but some is just doing some guessing on my part. Are you sure that the Penguin has gone into the a/c mode it's self or has it moved into the defrost mode? This has happen to me a couple of times on my 01 Monaco Windsor. When in the heat mode, depending on the moisture in the air, the coils will frost up and start blowing cold air. When you look at the thermostat it will say, Defrosting. It can take a while for the coils to defrost. I have never let it run in the defrost mode to see if it will switch back to the h/p mode, I just turn the unit off a wait about 5 minutes. In the owners manual for the thermostat, it explains this procedure. Not sure if this is what you are experiencing. Hope this info helps. Others here will chime in for some of their own experiences. Good luck!

What is the outside temperature when this is happening? If below 38-40 degrees, I think 8.3Oilbuner has given you the answer.

When my heat pumps go into defrost mode, the fan turns off while the compressor continues to run to defrost the coil. I run my fan in AUTO. If the fan is set to run continuously, it may keep running even when in defrost. Try running the fan in AUTO mode and see if it shuts off during defrost.

Sounds right. When mine goes into defrost, fan quits. Mine is set to auto.

Mine too ... when "Fan" is set to "Auto" and the Heat Pump goes into "Defrost" the fan is turned off.

The fan setting point made by the previous posters is a good one. If your fan is set in "On," it will run continuously. Set it on "Auto" to have it shut off during the defrost cycle.
At this point, we need some more information (outside temp, fan setting, etc.) to offer any further useful advice.
