Photo Orientation

Does anyone know how to ensure correct orientation of uploaded photos that post upside down or sideways? This issue has been frustrating me for years.

Open the photo, make any type of edit, save, then upload.

This is what I do. I'll open the image in MS Paint rotate if necessary and saving over top of the original.

I opened the photo as instructed, however, because the open photo displays in Safari, rather than iPhoto, where it is normally accessed, there is no "image" tab which allows for "rotating the image. The Safari window only displays "edit" or "view", neither of which has rotate options. I even tried to save the photo in iPhoto in an upside down configuration, then upload it as such. No Joy!

Why does this only happen with iPhone and not Android?

It has to do with the orientation tag in the exif information of the image file.

The forum software is either ignoring the orientation tag or rendering the tag properly and it's not saved properly in the image file.

So unless you can get this forum owner to research why the forum software is not reading the orientation tag the best bet is to get an app or some software to rotate the photo and save it as a new image.

If the image is rotated properly then try saving it as a new file that might strip the orientation tag or set it properly or not solve the problem.

Why iPhone and not Android? Something about the way iPhone saves the tag.

Google iPhone orientation tag vBulletin

vBulletin is the software running this forum. That Google search will make your head spin but it will explain the problem.

I had the same problem and another member said for me to turn my IPhone sideways with the camera lens on the left and the home button on the right (landscape). Ever since then my photos posted on this forum have come out correct.

Had this problem as a left hander when taking landscape photos via smartphones with camera button on left. Changed to "button on right" orientation and problem went away for me. Privilege has its price!

I find the issue only happens when holding my iPhone in a horizontal position, while holding it vertical it never seems to happen. As others have said, take the picture, look at in your photos, if needed edit and rotate the picture, then save, select the corrected picture in the IRV2 app
