plastic furnace register replacement

I found that the easily breakable plastic furnace floor registers can be replaced by a metal register with a shutoff shutter (Shoemaker mfg #350-21/4x10). I got these from a local hvac supplier for $4.33 plus tax. The inside flange diameter mathes the original B&B molders unit. The replacement register has a smaller overall dimension and no holes for hold-down screws. On carpeting, I just dropped them in, they can then be picked out for cleaning or retieving coins. On hard surfaces, perhaps new holes should be drilled and screws replaced to prevent rattles. You may also have a ring around the outside due to the smaller OD. I like the shutoff feature so that I dont have to heat the bedroom during the day.

The plastic vents were the first thing we replaced after a guest went thru the register with her high heels and made the vent holes larger.
Replaced with the type Dick discribed. You can find replacements at Lowe's or HD and they fit tight with out the need of screws.

Just replaced all of our flooring with the Home Depot's Allure vinyl planks and went online and found some adjustable brass vents for ours. The brown plastic vents did not look right. They fit tight with no screws.
