I was getting ready to pull out and closed my kitchen slide, everything retracted smoothly, but the power slide lock is not engaging. I've tried opening and closing it several times, but the arm will not close to lock the slide. I have a 2005 Newmar Dutch Star and was wondering if I can or should drive without the lock engaged. I'm supposed to pull out tomorrow morning. Just curious as to everyones thoughts about driving without the lock engaged. I'm taking the unit back to the factory for some work after the fourth of July weekend, so I need to drive the unit.

Hi washbob,
You should be okay to drive without the locks locked. When the ignition switch is in the on position there is no power to the slide motor(s). Try this do double check. The purpose of the locks is to make a solid bond with the side of the coach.

If it's like my Essex with the two power locks on top, you can check the led lights on the controller to see if the magnetic switch is made when retracted. If it is , there is an adjustable resistor under the cover that you can adjust for more load. When the locks or out it trips on overload and sometimes the controller is set just a little too low.

Thanks to all of you for your response. I only had a short trip (little over 300 miles today) and everything was fine. Now that I'm at a new campground, I will have a little time to troubleshoot the problem. If all else fails, I'm scheduled for fiberglass wall replacement and paint job (the dreaded checking problem) on July 11th and I'll have them look at it.
