Today I thought I would try some generator maintenance. I removed the air filter and found some bits of moss around the filter when I removed it. With a flashlight I looked inside the filter canister and saw a clump of moss around the intake tube. I pulled it out and found that the clump contained mouse droppings.... A sneaky little mouse must have found his way into the intake tube and built a nest... how he did that, or when I don't know.

I guess I will need to find out how to get at the open end and cover it with some wire mesh... now that I think of it, I think I read something like this in a forum thread. I also found some cat paw prints on the top of the generator. Maybe the cat was chasing the mouse...???

The more important thing I found was the filter had a date of 1999, so suspect that it had not been changed since the coach was new. It also looks like the fuel filter was original also, since it had black paint spray on it that looked like the surrounding black paint on the chassis parts.

Ok, so I am going to do a full generator maintenance, but I could not find a oil drain plug anywhere on the bottom of the generator.

Has anyone drained the oil on a Power Technology/Kubota generator?

I will bet that Norm4015 knows the answer... Norm... Norm?

It seems like it would have been reasonable for Power Tech to have supplied a few drawings or photos of the generator in their manual.

On my PT7000 I seem to remember the plug is bottom center of the generator just in front of the radiator.

The oil filter is just above and to the right rear as I face the generator on a front mount slide.

I will check later today as I will be also changing the oil etc.

My genset is mounted in a front slide out on my SOB.

Sorry, can't help on this. I have only owned Onans. But hang in there and a Newmar owner will step forward.

I called Power Tech and they said that if one removes the service panel on the right side of the generator housing, you can see the brass drain "valve" towards the back of the engine, near the radiator (similiar to what DeanDec said). They tell me the filter is behind the service panel also.

I sure didn't see any cutout in the bottom of the generator housing that would provide access to the drain valve, but will check again now that I know where to look.

Maybe I should take some photographs for posting to the "Quick Tips" section. Will try to do that if I tackle this myself.

Dealer service is sounding better, no matter what the cost. I can see that getting the fuel filter out and back in wont be fun, and I tried to get the service panel off last weekend and found that wasn't going to be removed easily... we'll see.

Just to make this thread a little more helpful, The generator is:

Power Technology PTS CD-7000 driven by a Kubota D-1105 engine.

Kubota Diesel Engine Super 05 series - Model D1105

I have an 8KW Powertech. To get at the oil drain plug remove the bottom access cover (easy to spot-toward the front of the gen, has a bolt at each corner; only access hatch), and voila, there's the oil pan and drain plug.

Take and cut up a piece of gutter guard and silicone it to the bottom opening of the air intake. The mice are chewing the insulation from the bottom hole flex duct to the air filter. They got inside my windings. What a mess.

Does your's have the vertical, right-side, access panel, also?

When I was underneath, looking up I didn't notice a panel that was bolted or removable. My recollection is that mine had a smooth bottom cover with only some 2" diameter holes (three I think). The holes were covered from the inside with some rubber foam material.

When talking to Pwr Tech, they said to remove the vertical side panel that is attached with two knurled nuts.

I will, of course, go back under and look at removing the bottom panel.

Thanks,

Gads,
I hope they haven't been anywhere else in my generator. Makes one wonder what is so compelling about the generator to a mouse. It doesn't seem to be the easiest place to get to from the ground.

Makes me wonder what's in my rear engine compartment....

Whoops, Error, Error. !!!

I just drained my Kubota base PT7000.

The drain plug was on the passenger side of the pan, but just behind the generation unit. Part way between the fuel filter and the oil filter. (Not back by the radiator as I previously said from memory.

I have an older unit and no classy cover so your mileage may vary.

Took about 25 minutes. Cover driveway with cardboard, set drain pan, pull, plug,
put smaller zip lock bags around the little fuel and oil filters to catch spills and spin them off. My oil filter is a pain to remove and then slide around the genset to get it to open air.

Sorry if I misguided you.

No problem. Well it won't be if you make it up to me by coming over this weekend to do mine!

It sounds like yours maybe a different model than mine, since it sounds like mine will be on the driver side. I will know more this weekend when I get back into it.

Oh, that's right your going to be here, huh?
