We need to pick up some boiler antifreeze for our Precision Temp heating system today. The manual says to get only a certain brand name. A dealer tells us we can use the product he has, that it's the same thing. Question: do we go strictly by the owners manual or, if it's the same thing, can we buy another brand? The problem we're having is that we're miles and miles from the nearest Newmar dealer and are having trouble locating the suggested antifreeze.

Thanks again for all the help this group as been. Couldn't do it without you all.

We've had trouble finding it too, so we have been using other brands of non-toxic hydronic fluid, which Camping World carries. So far, so good.

PG engine coolants are available. Even though for an engine, PG is used in some HVAC systems. Fleetguard has a PG premix, 50/50 plus concentrate if you want to mix your own ratio. PG coolants and heat transfer fluids area also available from Shell. You will likely have to deal with a local distributor or jobber to get the Shell products. Any Fleetguard distributor can get it for you though.

Do not be confused. Heat transfer fluid and engine coolant do exactly the same thing, move heat from one location to exchange with a lower temp as in a radiator.

With PT you can not use the standard boiler antifreeze. The boiler is aluminum base and appearant the standard pink antifreeze causes issues with boiler and can lead to slug in your system.

After PT ran several test, they recommend RhoGuard - it is blue boiler antifreeze that does not react with the aluminum boiler. Also they recommend one quart of Proteck 922 also be added. If you have the pink antifreeze in , you must flush out the system prior to using the RhoGuard.

RhoGuard is made by Rhomar Water Mangment Inc. If you google Rhomar - you can fine a list of distrubators. I live in Harrisburg and can get it from my local plumbing store. Although, I have to buy it in a 5 gallon bucket and you only need about 3 gallons. But it still is cheaper when you factor in the shipping to buy it that way rather then form PT.

Hope this helps.

After worrying about this issue, I sent off an email to Newmar and got this response today:
"We spoke with our technicians and they stated that if you use the Camco that you will need to add some Protect 2 in with the anti-freeze. We recommend using the Rhogard but if it is not available then we recommend using the Camco along with the substitute."
Thanks, Brian Fuchs, for your quick response.

We really don't want to carry two products with us and mess with mixing them so we're going to return the CAMCO and look again for the RhoGard. Since we're going to pick up the motorhome tomorrow in Columbia, PA, we'll check in some of the big towns on our way there. Wish us luck.

To conclude this thread, we found a place which is not too far from us to buy the RhoGard (thanks to Doc C). We're going up to get it next week.

We have a PT as well and RhoGard is the one you want for the reasons stated above.

I bought a gallon from an authorized Newmar warranty repair center for $59. I saw it at Texas RV Supply about a month later for $29. Same product, same size. Not having opened it, I took it back to the first place for a refund and a few choice words.

All we were able to find was a 5-gallon container. Sure wish we could have gotten a gallon jug but we plan to decant it into gallon containers to make it easier to carry with us. Will only need to take a gallon along on our trip . . . just in case.

I should add that the 5 gallons will cost us about $90. That's compared to the $17 we spent for a gallon of CAMCO.
