This morning while retracting the passenger window Dometic awning, it came in and out (I was not observing !) and stayed out - motor seems to work but it refuses to come back in.....poor litterature from Dometic - I will have to call a Tech down here in Dunedin, FL (here for the Winter) -

Hi Renden,
If you are posting about the entry door awning and the motor runs when the button is pushed, I may know what is wrong.

The motor connects to the awning roller tube with a male/female insert coupling. The only thing that allows the motor to power the awning roller tube is a key that fits into a mating slot in the other shaft. This key is made of soft aluminum. Every time one retracts the awning the key wears a little bit. Eventually the key wears enough to allow it to slip out of the mating slot. When this happens the awning springs (the awning is spring loaded outward ) open and stays there.

To make the repair, the awning needs to be removed and the motor removed from the awning roller tube shaft. Either a new part needs to be ordered or one can make a new key by drilling through the shaft with the male key and taping two holes with #6 threads. Get a couple of #6 set screws and Loctite them in place. The set screws now do the job of the male key.

Go to Door Awning Clutch - iRV2.com RV Photo Gallery to see the door awning clutch.

Go to Door Awning Clutch - iRV2.com RV Photo Gallery for another view. Look at about 7 o'clock. You should see one of the set screws I put into the clutch to act as a key for the mating motor shaft.

Thanks Gary
Your diagnosis was confirmed during the Tech visit this morning - ordered the clutch from Dometic - should have the work done by next Friday

Consider carrying a bunch of plastic wire ties. If this happens while you are motoring down the road, after the shock wears off you'll need to force the awning in and wire tie it in place so you can keep moving. This is not easy to do when one is on a flat, level and safe surface. On the side of the road it can be an adventure.

Also, consider making the repair mentioned in my post or carry an extra clutch. This can happen at any time.
