Last thread was in 2007 - we are near 2011 - any changes in opinions re: tire covers for long periods in the sun - I use a sunblock from BOSS and do have covers (I rarely use them) - will be in Florida all winter - Cover or not these Michelins XVRs ?????

Hi Renden,
I use Long-Lasting Tire Dressing, 16 Ounces - Cleaners - Wheels & Tires - Car Care - Griot's Garage as a tire dressing. I also cover the tires when the coach sets for more that a couple of weeks.

Renden,

As a matter of fact, I just bought a bottle of 303 today for my Diamond Shield so I'll also use it on my tires too. We're in Southern California and the sun can be brutal.

If you have Michelin or Goodyear tires you do not need any UV protection or covers, it is built into the tire. I think they started putting it in around 2004. http://www.goodyear.com/rv/faq/care.html#1

I too use 303. I also use covers to shield from the sun.

Hi lostagain,
For me there is an additional reason to use a tire dressing. It makes the tires look the way I want them to look. Different brands of dressings leave tires looking unique to that brand of dressing. Adding protection to what the manufacturer built into the tire can't hurt, but making my tires look the way I want them to look refines the overall way the coach presents itself.

If I'm going to be staying anywhere for a week or less I don't cover the tires but treat them with Aerospace 303, if I stay longer I'll treat with 303 then cover. Michelin use to make a real nice tire dressing that was non petroleum based but for some reason they stopped making it. The 303 works great and I can use it for other things. Mult-use products are great in an RV!

The question was asked about protection not looks.

Hi lostagain,
By golly you are absolutely correct. And your point is? Think of all the information that should be deleted, from this forum, if the specific comments in the OP were only replied to. Please remember posts provide information for all readers of all levels of skill. Posts provide information that could be of value to others. Was my post "off topic", I do not think so.

Quote from the Michelin Tire Guide: "Avoid prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays and cover the tires when the vehicle is not in use."

Also, Michelin does not say to not use a dressing product, only to assure the proper type is used.......ie: Tire dressings that contain petroleum products, alcohol, or silicones will cause deterioration or cracking and accelerate the aging process

Fwiw, Iv also been using 303 when washing the tires and tire covers when its parked.
So far, no problems.
Also use 303 on any black plastic parts. Doesnt seem to attract dust like some other products.

I guess I’m fortunate the slides cover the tires on the 5er. Is there a need to cover the truck tires or is this problem unique to RV tires?
