Question regarding my TRC SurgeGuard Model 34560 problems
I have a problem/issue that I haven't resolved conclusively (my wife says I have a lot of those).
Yesterday we arrived in Fredricksburg, Texas. I plugged the coach into a 50 amp service. The surge protector went through it's 2:16 second time delay and then went into a rather violent sounding buzzing and became very hot in just a few minutes.
Both "lines in" had indicator LED's lit, the time delay LED was flashing as it should. Then the violent buzzing occurred.
In order to get power I ended up wiring around it use an 8 ganged buss block temporarily as the "bypass switch" did nothing. Any thoughts? Internal relay is likely shot is what I am thinking
What say the collective?

Sounds like the big relay is buzzing. Does this happen to be mounted flat on the floor? That's the only position TRC does not recommend, it's possible the relay won't work reliably for a long period of time in this position. Otherwise it just failed, which happens. TRC has a one year warranty IIRC, so if it is new contact them and they'll tell you what to do.

It happened while mounted on a side wall. I called TRC and they said it sounded like the circuit board bit the dust. About my luck.

I would like to revisit this subject. Can these surge protectors be rebuilt? Does anyone know of any place that does it? TRS said they will only warrant new units and they no longer service faulty units out of warranty. Seems a waste to just trash it if repairs can be made. Call me cheap.

I do not know about his model but the older one I have can indeed be rebuilt,, however the rebuild falls into one of 3 or 4 categories.
I got a "Deal" on mine cause the outlet was history (melted) First time I've ever seen a 50 amp outlet melt down. had to put a new outlet on it.
You (or rather TRC) can replace the control board/read out assembly
Or the Contactors
or the MOVs (Spike Supressors) in fact I can do the MOV's.

I just replaced a Surgeguard that had gone bad with a Progressive. The Surgeguard had performed well (for 6 years) but Progressive makes a big deal about the fact that they can and will provide parts for rebuilding failed units.

Progressive simply rocks. I had some arcing at some point between the PT-50c and connecting cable. Progressive will do a refurbished exchange for $89.95. They don't appear to supply parts for repair. Simply replace or refurbish.
So after three years I have a new update PT-50C. Doesn't get any better than that. This was a user error/ordinary wear situation, well documented on their website. If the unit failed internally they would simply replace.
