AM (amplitude modulation) came first. It's very design tends pick up the "noise" (static) generated by electrical wires, lines, appliances, even the planet Earth. Then came FM (frequency modulation) which, by design, reduced the mount of "noise" (static). In an RV the wiring is very close and running all through the walls and ceiling so your radio being close to all that wiring will pick up the "noise" (static) generated by those wires.

Did that help with the "why?"

Biggest culprit is the cheap bathroom fan when on or even a hair dryer.

You can spend a lot of time and money with power filters, torrid (ferrite) coils and capacitors and still have the problem on the AM band.

First place to check is all of the ground connections on both the 12 VDC and 120 VAC circuits. Check app of the connections at the breakers, Power converter, inverter, batteries and the coach ground system.

But you need to determine if the noise is coming in through the power supply or the antenna.

Have fun chasing the noise. You may get lucky and find a major problem pretty quickly.

Just a reference point, one cheap thing to use tracking noise is to use a cheap portable radio tuned to the AM band around 640. Get it around a noise source and it will get louder.

Another consideration is switching power supplies and the biggie.. MSW inverters.

AM radios generally do not work with MSW inverters, TSW no problem but MSW generally make so much noise that unless you are in the radio station transmitter's parking lot. (ok, not quite that bad but not far from it)

FM radios generally don't mind MSW inverters. but even here.. It might interfere.

And that's in addition to things like the fan mentioned by 007
