Rear roof AC not cooling

I have a 2008 Kountry Star that the rear AC unit is not cooling. I have read that they are a sealed unit and can not be serviced if the freon or whatever they use has leaked out. Is it better to just install a new unit, or try and fix the old one.

There are several things that will keep an a/c unit from cooling. Relays, thermostat, capacitors, etc. First I would do a little troubleshooting before anything else.
To answer your question, yes they are a sealed unit, but a fitting can be installed although it's normally not done. Like I said above I'd make sure it was a leak before assuming that. If there is a leak you should be able to see some sign of oily residue.

I had a similar problem of not cooling, I had removed the ac cover, ran the ac,still not cooling . Had wife shut off ac unit while I was on top of roof, heard freon gas leaking from copper line. The line had vibrated and caused a crack. Called a ac guy and he silver so deed it up. Install a system recharge fitting, pumped it down and recharged it and it started cooling. I was lucky in finding the freon leak. Your problem might be different.GOOD LUCK

Hi TUCSONRAIL,
Are the fans running? Is the compressor running? Could be a start capacitor. Take the shroud off. There is a metal box one must remove the lid. If it is a capacitor usually you will be able to tell. There will be gooey gunk all over the top of the capacitor.

Hi Gary, Yes the fan runs, and it comes on immediately instead of the normal 2 minute delay before the AC kicks on.

Do you hear anything leaking out after shutting it off ? Have someone shut it off while you are up there with cover off .

Hi TUCSONRAIL,
Make sure the evaporator and condenser fins are clean. Really clean.

I had one fail. Amp meter showed a current draw on AC and heat pump that meant the compressor was running but no freon, per my tech. Replaced the unit.
