Received refer Recall today - I'm scared !!!

I received a letter from Newmar today about the refrigerator recall - seems that there is a real hazard in that if I'm sitting inside the refrigerator , the door may shut and lock me in. This would be especially bad if I had gone in the refrigerator to get a beer and had to crawl in only to find there we had none left. I'd be locked in without needed supplies!

This is on the residential Maytag refer.

Seriously, has anyone had the recall performed ? I can't see how the latch would lock on it's own... heck, it's hard enough to get it to latch properly when we get ready to leave our site. Just wondering what they will be putting on there to remedy the situation. I'm not about to drive 100 miles to the nearest Newmar dealer for this anytime soon.

NHTSA Campaign ID: 15V808000

Manufacturer: Newmar Corporation

Recall Date: 20151201
Component: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES DOORS:LATCH

Potential # of
Units Affected: 979

Summary:

Newmar Corporation (Newmar) is recalling certain model year 2008-2014 King Aire, 2009-2014 Essex, 2011-2015 Mountain Aire, Ventana, and Dutch
Star, 2012-2014 Ventana LE, 2012-2015 Canyon Star, and 2015 London Aire motorhomes.
The affected vehicles are equipped with refrigerator door latches that may inadvertently lock without the operator''s knowledge.

Consequence:

If an individual climbed into the refrigerator and the door inadvertently latched, the person would not be able to open the door, increasing their risk of injury.

Neat, but they're still letting them sell the Norcold 1200's that burn themselves and the rig they're in up with remarkable consistency. Ya' gotta love the government. Our bureaucrats and tax money at work.

I got the letter too. It calls for .1 hours to repair.....6 minutes. I'm going to call Newmar and see if they will just send it to me. It's not worth pulling the coach out for a 6 minute repair.

I do know that the lock they used can have the doors closed while in the locked position. We're careful about doing that.

Don ... I just sent Newmar an email last night asking if they can just send me the part as well. Hope they will.

I called and they said they will not send me the parts- it has to be installed by a " RV technician" so they can update their database. If anyone else is successful in just getting the part, please let me know.

Sure makes me glad that I have the Samsung residential fridge with custom designed travel latches that are fail-safe.

What we they come up with next?

I got the same answer ... and now that I fully understand what this is really for ... not sure I will "jump on it" today!

I don't know what you guys did, but I called Newmar this morning and they're sending me the part. Maybe they will change their mind, but that's what they told me. The tech said they really haven't had any issues with it and thought it was kind of a silly recall. I agree with him.
