My Samsung RF 197 residential refer has run fine on my modified sine wave inverter for the last three years. Absolutely no issues. No need to change to pure sine wave. Before I bought the refer I called Samsung to verify it would work on a msw inverter an they said it would. However if you choose a different brand you should verify that it would work with a msw inverter.

Doing this modification soon after getting our 2008 DSDP. Already have it scheduled to replace with the counter depth Samsung as well. Runs off of our inverter so no issues there. We do have to have some modifications to the size of the opening, but no real biggie. Good luck! Oh-- and Home Depot have these on sale right now!

Here is a 12V DC, 120V AC compressor style fridge that you might consider.

You would think that it should definitely have a place in the RV market.

Excellent point. I hadn't thought of that. But yes, most electric motors (and that includes the compressor motor of a "residential" type refrigeration system run much cooler with pure sine-wave power. And a cooler running motor means it'll last longer.

This will add approximately $1,500 to your project if you can replace the inverter and remote yourself. More $$$ if you cannot replace them yourself.

Don't get me wrong, we want a residential refrigerator in our older coach. I just cannot justify the total modification price tag. Maybe I would think differently if our Norcold fails. If it does, however, I think I would opt to replace the cooling unit and save our modification money for a newer coach.
Good point. This is one of the reasons the NovaCool is a better choice since the compressor is a DC Variable Speed. Not affected by the Inverter.

Yes I have had my hands in this problem also.
New Nocolds do not have the problems of the old Norcolds.
Here is a MAYTAG conversion. OK if no boon docking.
Conversions using the Amish cooling coils. #1 -- #2 Both still working fine for boon dockers.

JC Refrigerations new compressor powered cooling unit looks like the way to go. Best of both worlds. It will be interesting to hear the reviews on this option.

Refrigerator upgrade

I could have stopped at JC Refr while in Shipshewana a few weeks ago but didn’t, they were right down the road. I don’t know if they give tours but I didn’t want to waste their time being I don’t need one anymore.

This site offers conversion options, Refrigeration Size Comparison. I am seriously thinking of replacing my Dometic with an Isotherm CR219, 2 way compressor type. Vitrifrigo makes some beautiful units but none will fit my spot.

I got a 15cf Haier (GE) 2 door (bottom freezer) at Home Depot for about $800. It is a little narrower than the old one but I put some command strip hooks on one side of the refrigerator for more hanging storage. I had to remove the passenger seat (4 bolts) and slid out the Norcold myself and let the delivery guys lift the new one into the coach. I closed off and insulated (with sheet Styrofoam) the side access door and roof vent. Easy job and we are more than happy with the modern refrigerator. We cannot even hear the compressor.

You said it was a GE, model #?

How big was the hole you had/needed to fill?

Photos?

Thanks,

Tom

It is a Haier hrb15n3bgs (Haier used to be GE) from Home Depot. It replaced a 4 door Norcold 1200. The Haier is narrower than the Norcold and I left the gap for proper ventilation because I closed off the side and roof vents. We use that narrow space for storage for a folding step ladder and hanging some coats on Command Strip hooks on the side of the refrigerator. Because of the furnace and subwoofer under the refrigerator, I needed a refrigerator that is a little shorter than the Samsung RF18. I lowered the refrigerator cabinet floor about 2" or so.

Thanks for the photos and model. This is a smaller fridge but the height is lower. I like the Samsung but without major cabinet and floor modifications I'm not sure how I'm going to get it to fit? My Dometic is 64" tall.

Thanks,

Tom

Lowering the floor doesn't have to be "major".
