Replacing Slide out Rollers on a '04 MA

After reviewing a recent post on this subject I knew there must be an easier way. This worked for me:

Tilting the Slide Out to raise the Rollers
I contacted Newmar Customer Service, and was sent a picture and directions for tilting the slide to access the slide rollers.

On the inside of the coach, I placed a block of wood between the underneath side of the slide floor and the main floor to keep the slide from falling on my hands during the process. I raised the floor slightly for a snug fit and kept the block in place near the roller I was working on.

Removing Slide Rollers
The axle that runs through the gray roller is spring loaded and slides in one direction only. I determine the direction of travel. Then secured a vise grip to the end of the axle that moves outward. Then using a large flat screwdriver as a wedge, I wedged between the bracket holding the roller and the vise grip and moved the screwdriver handle towards the roller. This caused the roller axle to move releasing the axle on the other end. Using this procedure I removed the rollers in less than a minute each.

Re-installation
To install the new roller, I used the vise grip technique in reverse order. I placed the axle end that moves away from the roller in the mounting bracket. Then secured the vise grips on that end. Using the screwdriver wedge to retract the axle at the other end and released the wedge as the axle aligned with the bracket hole. All rollers were replaced within an hour using this method.

Thanks for that info.

And would you happen to have any pictures of the work? I'll need to do the same thing next time home on our coach.

Is that something you can post?

Hi ByeThe Way,

Would you elaborate on the first part of your post - "Tilting the slide out to raise the rollers" - specifically more detail on how you went about the tilting. Did you run the slide out part way or all the way? If you tilted from the inside, how did you do it? Use a pry bar or piece of wood? Perhaps you could just post the pictures and directions you received from Newmar to do this.

I may need to do the same thing soon.

Thanks.

When I contact Newmar, I include my vin number. The directions sent may be specific to my year and model. Therefore for your safety I'd recommend you do the same. Their suggested procedure made me very nervous. But it worked. I am not the original owner of my coach, but Newmar has always treated me well. They are very helpful.

Is this the long "rolling pin" roller? Mine has lost a bearing on one end. Front end of left front slide.

The roller I used was Newmar part #27195 & cost $17.77 each. They are grey in color.

I replaced them all. The rear had a badly bent axle, the front was slightly bent and the ones in between appeared "OK". I kept them for spares.

You should change it before it marks up floor or pull rug and check others also.

Yes, RV shop denied pieces of bearing had anything to do with rollers or slide. This despite narrow black (grease?) Mark on carpet. We are heading to palm springs area soon. Hope to find a good shop to diag and repair. We do have aftermarket warranty that will cover it. And as a side, thanks 007 for all your input on this site!
