I don't have a problem staying at truck stops. Most truckers I've met are nice and very friendly. I can't see someone messing with a rig when there are so many eyes around. I never open my slides, don't wanna take a chance someone might hit it. Regarding noise, I almost never hear trucks near me and I don't hear their refers either. My MH is very quiet inside.

I think truckers target RV in rest stops, I have been in some with not many in them when a truck pills in and parks right next to me with plenty of empty spots around, cattle hauler's are pretty noisy walking around all night banging the aluminum.

When you use any public parking lot for an overnight I'd highly recommend you test your toad's towing equipment thoroughly although this should really be done even in a RV park if just staying overnight and still hitched up. We know of one person that pulled out with the tow bars loosened during the night - a lot of damage to their car and the rear of the motorhome.

Last night we overnighted at a highway rest stop......
First and LAST time for that nonsense.
Guy with a real nice Spartan left his marker/running lights on ALL night.
Lit up the inside of our bedroom like a neon Las Vegas sign......sheesh!
Sorry Dr. Phil.
Just yanking your chain
Why the lights on outside while you're inside SLEEPING

"Mr_D".......Maybe...reread what I wrote. I've stayed at Walmarts over the years, but I knew what the surroundings were like. I invite you to stay at a Walmart, in Fresno, Ca, Chicago, IL, or some other high crime areas. My point, too many idiots out there to be worrying all night if you're having your stuff stolen or your coach vandalized. I guess it was my 35 years in law enforcement that gave me a better idea of what's safe and what isn't.
Yes, 20 or 30 years ago, truckers were "Kings of the Road" and owner/operators. They were the most helpful people on the road you could find. Things have changed.....changed a lot! Many of the truckers don't even speak English. They're driving someone else's truck and could care less about others on the road. I don't see a need to thank any trucker for what he/she does. Many drivers are running successful small trucking companies, are courteous, family oriented and smart businessman/woman. With that said, I certainly don't see the need to thank truckers for doing their job. It's a job that can be had by passing a driving test....period. No special education, schooling etc. I'm not putting down truckers, but I certainly don't see them being put on a pedestal.
Personally, I feel that many dislike RVer's, especially those poking along and getting in their way. I've always been of the opinion that they target RV's in rest stops as "ransil" stated. In our younger days, the few times we stopped at rest stops, we would park away from any trucks, only two find one on both sides of us in the morning with refers running and 20 empty spots in the rest stop. They feel they pay more road taxes than anyone else and the rest areas are for their sole use. Many of the trucks in California use to post how much they paid per year in road taxes on a placard on the back of their truck. The only thing they didn't do, was the math. An RVer in California pays more in road taxes per mile than any truck.

I completely disagree.
another tip
one suggestion parking near trucks keep the bedroom opposite their cab, the noise will be 50' away

Hello,
I reviewed what I wrote in post #22 & I don't think I disrespected truck drivers or farmers at all. Point I tried to make was I stop at rest stops all over the country and many are terrible. They are terrible IMO because of drivers using the pavement instead of the rest rooms. I would think a true pro driver is quite disgusted with this as well.

Great reading all the posts - both serious and humorous - upon return to the base camp today. Normally not a big fan of rest stops either - in fact his was the first for us. A medical issue back home caused us to depart 12 hours early from our campsite, and therefore a rest stop was unavoidable. Turned out fine this time, and my wife and I checked another off the bucket list - haha! Incidentally the maiden voyage in our new DSDP was quite successful - more details on this topic will be posted later.

I try to get in by 9pm to find a spot at the inn. Some have islands in the middle and I will park with slide towards the island. Depending on the big rigs who normally run with their engines on I'll run t h e generator for a bit. Finally I use Chem lights on the tail v end of the coach. Have stayed at many Rest Stops from Cali to NY. No problems yet. Have a Safe Trip.

End spot gives you room for the slides, in dark areas I leave the porch light on so they can see the NRA sticker
