Run the AC on battery?
Stupid question, is it possible to run the AC without starting the generator? Everything we tried doesn't work unless the generator is running.

Mark there are no stupid questions when it comes to these houses on wheels. I believe the answer is no, I have read that they are wired so that the inverter won't be connected. I have an all electric coach and they told me only on shore or gen power.

ACs draw way to much power for the typical battery bank to invert enough power for more then a an hour or so.

Hi marknpeg,
No A/C on the battery technology currently in place.
However, there is hope for the future. There is a manufacturer (sorry forgot the name) that is filling the battery area with lithium battery packs. It will run the A/C. Don't know the details, but running the A/C on batteries is coming.

If you open the load center in your coach...there is a lineup of breakers for Airconditioning, Oasis, or electric water heating, Washer and Dryer, Induction cooktop, etc...those can only get power from the Shore Power or Generator thru the transfer switch. Then a small group to the side. Those are the inverter Circuits, Convection/Microwave, Residential fridge, etc...

Thanks everyone, I figured as much but it was worth asking. Cabela-docking tonight and it's warm out, so we're running the generator and AC. No one else here so we'll make as much noise as we like!

Not on a stock Newmar. Check out "gone with the wynns" on Youtube. They have a video on doing ac on battteries. Technomadia folks also discuss large draw AC setups, check them out.

Yes, but the Wynn's only got around 4 hours with a very expensive battery bank.

As stated, it's possible. Not practical though. Run the generator. That's what it's for. And if you're concerned about noise, if it's hot enough to run the AC you're probably not the only one running the gennie.

The installed inverter could run 1 AC unit but it isn't in the loop of the inverter.
With a combination of a Magnum hybrid inverter, solar panels and lithium batteries if you do a lot of BoonDocking you could run a single AC for 4-6 hours and still get a full recharge the next day from solar. But would one AC keep you cool enough?
