We wrote a blog post a while back on our boating blog in hopes of preventing others from falling for these scams. I hope it isn't an issue to post a link here. It's just too much info to repost. https://trawler-beach-house.blogspot.com/2016/07/how-to-avoid-scammers.htm Chuck

You cash their cheque. You send the product and extra cash to them. 2 weeks later your charged back because the cheque bounced.

I've seen the similar or same wording in scams on stuff I've sold on Craigslist or stuff I'm trying to buy off Craigslist. But I like to play with the scammers ... in the case of them selling a zero-turn lawnmower (which is in another state) that I'm inquiring about, they are currently out of country or "deployed" and unable to do the deal themselves so leave it up to a third party. And the pics are accurate and the item is guaranteed or I can refuse shipment when it's shipped to me. I just ask them where it's located and they come back with a city and state. I tell them I have a brother in that city, let me know the address where stored, and I'll have him take a look at it. I usually don't hear back from the after that email exchange! There is a lot of scammers!!

The RV section of CL is crawling with scammers. I was pretty good at spotting most but there were a couple where I responded only to have them come back requesting my actual email to send me more pics. Always had some excuse why they couldnít send them through CL.

I never did give them my personal email, just used the email provided by CL. Agree, they do try to get your personal email.

Yeah I didnít think you had. I was just commiserating. I no longer look at the section. I feel so angry at the scammers and sad for the people that fall for it. I deal with it daily at work. I hope there is a special place in hell for all the scammers.

Always must come see item for sale and cash only! I don't care if they live 5k miles away and it's for $10k, their problem.

Just about every time I have listed anything on CL for over a certain dollar amount I will get one of the scammers to answer the ad. I respond like I am going along and all excited about selling to them. Then I tell them I work the midnight shift and they will need to meet me and my "boys" at a certain location on the south side of Chicago to make the exchange at 2am, my item for their check or money order. Never hear back from them.

That's a sure safe approach but will limit your options.
I have sold a bunch of stuff on CL and get a fair share of scammers...usually easy to spot.
I will ship small items but always specify cash of PayPal for small $ and wire xfer for larger amounts.

Sold a TOAD here in iRV2 classifieds this year.
Initial reply was from 1500 mi away and was immediately suspicious. Correspondence continued... Sent more info & pics... Finally talked via phone and found buyer was in TX and I'm in NY... Said he was interested and would arrange a shipper... Warning bells ringing but continued to communicate.
Finally negotiated a selling $ and agreed to accept wire transfer of funds.
Deal went through w/o a problem...trucking company picked up the Toad after funds were transferred and I mailed BOS and title to the buyer.

Moral of the story... IMHO

Be alert and cautious w scammers but...
Don't rule out a no inspection deal.
Wire transfers work well and usually scare off scammers the same as cash only
