I see where there has been some discussion about the Bay Star or Canyon Star as the replacement for the Scottsdale. Does anyone know why the Scottsdale was cancelled? Looked like a decent motorhome to me. Were sales lagging or were there problems in the design or use? It's one we were considering and now it's gone.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the Scottdale. I would think any change is on a marketing approach. The Scottdale is an awesome coach and such name changes will never change it.
If you have a Scottdale, be proud of it, as a Newmar you have a great coach.

If your looking for a used one it will be on a Workhorse chassis 02-05 you will see a BIG difference in ride compared to your Ford 460.

I also think it's marketing / rebranding, which all manufacturers do from time to time. I wouldn't give it a second thought. Biggest difference is that you could get the newer chassis / powertrains in the Bay Star / Canyon Star models (all of the Scottsdales were built on 22K or less WH or Ford chassis).

OBTW: If you want it, you'll have to pry my Workhorse/Scottsdale from my cold, dead fingers. For the (relatively small amount of) money I have in it, yeah, it's that good.

Unless you have a compelling reason to buy new keep looking around for a used or leftover Scottsdale; you'll save money and get a great coach. I know of several on the lot at Leisure Tyme in Pensacola, FL.

OH... You're in Ontario. Hmmm... maybe you should visit northwestern Florida this winter?

Thanks for the info so far. You are probably right it is just marketing. But I was disappointed to see the loss of the Scottsdale. We always buy used, 3-4 years old. A lot of the depreciation is off by then and the RV is still in great condition with years/miles of life left in her. We have checked the dealers in Florida the last few years and they have had some great prices compared to what I would pay up here for the same thing. OH, and I did drive an 05 Workhorse chassis motorhome at the Winnebago factory when we toured there. What a difference it was from my F-53 460, much quieter. But I am not complaining about the Ford it has been good too.

My sense is that the Scottsdale model, as the Newmar entry level gas, was not as profitable as expected, based on the standard equipment and option packages available. It is an awesome coach, comparable to competitors models priced considerably more ( based on a year of shopping before I bought my Scottsdale ).
I think Newmar realized that by introducing two models that bracket the Scottsdale in terms of price and option availability, they probably improve their profitability and better serve a defined RV market segment.

We looked at different coaches for a whole year before deciding on and ordering our Scottsdale. It was the best bang for the buck deal around for a solidly constructed coach with (at the time) a heck of a 3 year factory warranty. The few problems we have had have all been associated with Workhorse W22 chassis and not Newmar. When we were at the factory, you could see the Mountain Aires come down the same assembly lines with the same workers as the Scottsdale.
We have been told by Newmar factory rep and dealer that with all the amenities the Scottsdale had that it was too close to the price point of a KS gas model and the margin dollars were not what they wanted. When we look under things a lot of them even have part numbers that start with KS...We just had a smaller steering wheel and smaller 19.5 tires - but we could carry a fully aired spare underneath. I don't think you will go wrong with one. We have been very pleased with it.

We love our '03 Scottsdale 3257 on Workhorse W22. I was pretty lucky when I bought mine, I didn't know about them. I was at a large arena-type motorhome show that was closing on a Sunday at 5pm back in Nov '04. I wasn't planning on buying anything. They dropped the price on a Scottsdale about 4pm that day to 79,995. It had a manufacture date of Apr 03, and it still hadn't sold. They were trying to get rid of the 04's, and really slashed the price on my new'03. I think I got a great deal, I made hasty, unplanned arrangements to procure it right there. So I was lucky that time, usually impulse shopping like that without research ends in unhappy results. It was then after months of research that I realized I scored quite well. Was that a pretty good deal?
I attended the Newmar International Rally last year in Salem OR. I was suprised to find only one other Scottsdale. Out of 677 coaches. Anyway, it was great reading jbrnigan's and Fillitup's posts,they seem like happy owners also. Thanks to all who provided Scottsdale information. Tom

I also emailed Newmar last week, but have not had a reply yet. We toured their factory also and were impressed. It is an assembly line but not like the moving one at Winnebago. My wife pushed a 40ft DP sideways with one hand, that was cool.
