Side Radiator Dust Storm --- fixed ?

Just curious...
Yesterday, I decided to do some put off maintenance. While at Gaffney earlier this year, the tech was doing his exterior inspection before taking the coach into the bay and pointed out that the black plastic shroud at the bottom of the radiator grill was cracked- he said most of them are. I finally got around to taking it off and fiberglassed it,repainted it and now it's much better than new. Today, I'll put latches on the grill as DS Don and PDR John did so I have better access for cleaning the radiator. I guess, next I'll fab an air deflector as many have done to address the dust storm that we experience on dirt roads and was talked about to great length on this forum. I know Freightliner also now provides a kit for $$$'s to address this issue.
So, I was just curious and wanted to ask those that have purchased a new coach recently if Newmar/Freightliner as included the deflector as standard in the build.

I made brackets for the push button latches on the radiator grill yesterday and will install them today. Makes for much easier access for cleaning.
After that, I'll mock up a air deflector along the lines of the Freightliner one or like the one that SWag and his son Brooks were making a couple years ago and then find a sheet metal shop with a brake to bend it up for me.

Pan......for 2019, Freightliner installed the deflector as original equipment. It's quite a bit more inclusive than my home made model. Now they just need to dump that plastic grill and build a steel one.

And so side radiators are better than rear? NO.
1. Initial costs much cheaper on rear.
2. No dust. Radiator is higher on rear.
3. No deflectors needed, cracked or in the way to service.
4. I've got engine side exposure. Side radiators do not. I've checked several times.
5. Can still get access to rear fan belt by removing 2 bolts for bracket to fan. 5 min job.
6. Far less maint, servicing and replacement costs than side. No gear boxes, PTO's, or hydraulic systems as on rear.
7. Better mpg on rear due to no gear boxes, or hydraulic pumps. Sides require 20-40 more horse power.
8. I've got good access for cleaning CAC and Rad. Especially from the rear to blow junk out from the direction it came in.
9. Newer rears have better side covers so less junk gets between CAC and Rad.
10. Air flow is in the direction the vehicle is traveling on rear, not 90d to direction of travel.

That's good news that they took action on the deflector. Thanks !

I have the rear deflector, and it is very solid. Only downside is that it will add 15 minutes to service the fan gearbox.

"Fiesta48".....I don't know where you got your information, but after 12 years on this forum, it's the most INACCURATE information I've ever read. All ten of your points are wrong. You might do some research before writing such an embarrassing statement.

Probably find by doing a search... I think I may have a parts breakdown from FL on their "fix" -- I'll look around a bit later.

Agree 110% with you Don. I had a rear radiator Itasca for 11 years and swore at that radiator every time I had to try cleaning it out after the first 3 years ownership when it started running hot.

Here is some info on the FL dust shield that I have installed on mine. It does help reduce dusting, but does not completely eliminate the dust kicked up on passenger side of coach.
