I'm looking at a double-slide 2001 Mountain Aire DP that doesn't have toppers on either slide. I've seen them on other 2001 MADPs.
What's the deal? Were they optional? Also, cost to add them?
Tx again.

CW has them or do you have the hardware only and need the toppers.
Here are instructions on DIYS.

Toppers, in my opinion, may be overrated, let me explain. My coach has three toppers (with four slides). The ODS (front) has no topper, never did, never will, and had never collected water/leaked.etc. The DS (front) slide has a topper, which has allowed water to accumulate under it, so that when we bring the slide in we get splashed inside the coach. It was that way since new, and the only way I found to remedy it was to put new sealer up on the roof (where the roof and bracket meet). So, if toppers were not there when new, maybe it was designed properly to begin with.

Yes, back then slide toppers were optional from Newmar. When we ordered our 2003 KSCA we were told that Mr. Miller said his slideouts don't leak and toppers are not needed (he apparently never camped under pine trees)
He was also quoted as having said...if the customer wants them, let'm pay for them. And so we did, for both of our 2 slideouts. Ed

Believe slide toppers were not really meant to prevent leakage but to keep debris off the slide. Just park under a tree with needles or falling leaves/etc to make you a believer in the toppers.

If you know you collect water on slide roof after rain, drop front jacks down before pulling in slide on departure.
I say same thing as RVhauler keeps junk off top of slide or you may be cleaning it off inside coach.
If your slide leaks thats another problem.

TechWriter:
Only YOU can decide whether slide toppers are a good thing or not. We've had em on our first rig (06 Mtn. Aire) AND now on our 08 EX and WE really appreciate having em. We don't view them as something to deal with water run-off as much as features that keep debris from accumulating atop your slide!! It could be a real bother having to climb up a ladder or atop your roof to sweep off the top of your slides each time you're getting ready to retract em. We have 4 slides and 4 toppers and they really DO the job.

Slide toppers are one of those items that serve a purpose but can be problematic in that the fabric will eventually tear and need replacement, and, if not adjusted correctly, can cause some damage to your slide (don't ask how I know). IMO, they are very useful in keeping debris off the slide roof.

Not sure why some people have problems with their slide toppers I have them on 7 year coach and never had a problem they show age but fabric still looks good.
I do clean them when washing the roof I use a TURTLE ZIP WAX on roof and tops when cleaning.
