Hi all a few months ago we purchased a 2003 mountainaire mapd4005 with an isl400. we love this motorhome. My only complaint is the smell we get in the back bedroom. After about an hour of crusing down the road we start to smell a hot plastic burning smell ,Im not sure if it is exhaust or diesel smell. It is some what hard to discribe. After a few hours it is fairly strong but remains about the same. Any ideas of what could be going on would be nice.

Thanks in advance
JR.

Welcome DESRTONE to the Newmar forum & irv2.
Congrats on being a Newmar owner.
Some engine covers under cover has plastic clear sheet stapled to it. The age of coach and heat may have caused plastic sheet to drop on hot engine causing smell.
I would have it checked by yourself or Spartan dealer.
Enjoy the forums and do post often.

DESRTONE:

G'morning. Would you say this smell is like overheated electrical wiring?? If so....do ya detect the same odor underneath this area in the bay compartments (ie., open one bay door at a time including elec. cable compartment, furnace bay, wtr./sewer bay, and battery bay), or might it seem stronger in the storage bins under your bed (ie., lift mattress), and...I'm sure you've already eliminated your breaker panel and the other fuse cabinet in your commode compartment.

Point is that....IF....it's electrical overheat issue (like bdrm. lighting, washer/dryer, closet lights, bdrm. heater fan, etc.) it's a matter of tracking down the source...which is what your asking about. Hopefully someone having the same experience will jump in. Steve & Lynette

Thanks all, I dont believe it to be electrical. I will double check my rear hatch to make sure it is sealed properly. The exhaust system is in good shape and nothing is in contact with the engine. It could be possible that exhaust might be getting in some how.

I usually blame the 2 year old. But seriously, glad to hear you are on the right track. This forum is an excellent resource, lots of freindly, helpful folks here.

We have a 2004 Dutch Star that had the same type problem. It turned out to be the insulation around the engine compartment. We took our coach to the newmar factory and fixed the problem. You need to contact Newmar. They may be willing to help you even though your coach is out of warranty.

Thanks RMELLEN that could could very well be our problem. It is a very distinct smell and hot insulation would describe it well. I will contact Newmar for more information.

Thanks
JR
