Somewhat a gross topic
We dumped our black & gray water tanks the other day. The black was reading 1/3 and the gray 2/3.
We got all the required tools to do the job and when I removed the twist cap on the drain pipe I was extremely surprised when black water came out of the pipe. Not much maybe 2 - 4 oz but it created a mess to clean.
I raised this to the RV service department and was told that is normal. Before I make this an issue I wanted to ask this group if this is in fact normal and if it is how do I protect the plastic tray below the drain?
Thanks
John

This has Never happened to me. If the slide valve is sealing properly, there should be zero leakage. Perhaps the service person is just not up to doing his job and tells you it's normal. I say, BS.

I would have to call BS as well. We have never had so much as a drop of black or grey with our Newmar. Our 20 plus year old Class C Coachman never left a drop either. Good luck!

Depends on how far back up the drain pipe the valves are located. On our trailer, the valves are in the middle of the belly, about 7 feet from the end of the dump pipe. During travel, the residual fuid in the pipes would shake down to the end of the pipe.
We put a third valve from Valterra on the end of the pipe so that we could attach the hose before opening the third valve.
Now our Bounder's valves are just a few inches from the end of the dump pipe, If I had accumulating there, I would suspect a leaking valve.

If your drain tube is like mine it is a long way from the valve to the connector. If you don't shut the valve and then let it completely drain off, you will get some residual "stuff" come out when you open the connector the next time. If it were a leaking valve it would be a much bigger mess. That never happens on the back tank as the valve is a couple inches from the connector.
That has happened to us a few times. I carry those pet training pads and put it under the connector when I first open it, that way if I get a little drainage, it just goes on the pad and I throw it away, no mess.

It happened when we first purchased the RV. Took it in under warranty to have them replace the valve and found that the service tech merely cleaned the surface around the valve. He mentioned that it was not uncommon for new coaches since there is plastic shavings, etc in a new tank and sometimes the debris will wedge in the valve seat. Made sense and haven't had any further leakage.

When we first bought our used coach, there was a small leak coming from the black tank valve. I removed the valve and found a very small hearing aide battery wedged down in the rubber sealing part of the valve. After removing the hearing aide battery and greasing the sliding plastic part with Plumbers Grease I don't have any more leaks at all.
BTW, the hearing aide battery tested as completely dead, just in case someone out there wanted to know.

This was a problem on my BS. But the solution was simple. Buy a clear 45 adapter, install on the outlet along with a third slide valve. Now you can see the mess and control it. Very simple and not costly

That can only happen if the black tank dump valve is not sealing correctly when closed, or if it was not closed completely when you last dumped.

One more thing that can be the problem even if everything is working as designed. Your Y tube rotates both up and down. If when you empty the tanks and the tube is tilted up even a little bit the last bit of water will not not drain out. So you put the cap on and that collected water stays trapped in there until you open the cap again. Then when you open the cap, you then move the Y down to fit the drain hose and guess what comes rolling out.
i have had it happen and I know better.

Jim_L makes a very good point. The valve is definitely leaking a small amount, but it shouldn't leak ANY. I would try a couple more tank fills and see if it still has the leakage. If it does then the valve needs to be taken out and cleaned or replaced.

I also think the valve is leaking -- rubber seal or flange needs cleaning or replacing.
I'm puzzled that this wouldn't have been a slow leak rather than sudden failure?

A slow leak in either of the sewer valves while the 3" sewer cap is on will/can result in a sudden spill when the cap is removed.
