I have a model 3666 2001 Dutch Star Diesel Puller and need to install a spare tire carrier. Have an idea of building on on one side of the frame behind a locker door that lets down for easy removal and replacing. Just wondered if anyone knew of a commercial one that works well.

Can't believe Newmar did not put on on the rig.

Welcome Sailor to the Newmar grp. and to irv2. Newmar has had spare tire holders in the rear bumpers that slide out an like mine a carrier that drops down just to the rear of the gas tank on my 2003 KS. I do not know if you can get one from Newmar to install on yours but its worth a try. I was not sure you had a puller, I until you changed your post.--007

Contemplating a trip to Alaska, I've investigated the "no room for a spare" problem. If I tow the CRV, it will carry the unmounted spare inside. But without a toad, I don't need my hitch leaving the receiver free for a cargo carrier to hold a properly secured tire.

Is there any reason why this is not a good idea?

Personally, I wouldn't leave the toad home on a trip like that. You can add a spare tire carrier and still tow your CRV. Check out the following link for the RV Tire Carrier, which lets you do both. That's what I would do on an Alaska trip.
