If not, how can you tell?

Great to know!

I'm looking at used Dutch Stars and it looks like Spartan MM has been standard since 2000. Does that sound right?

No.

The Spartan was an extra cost upgrade from Freightliner around that time.

I'm not sure of the year, but later on Spartan was the only chassis available.

This information is from my failing memory so it may not be exactly right.

From about 1997 until about 2004 Dutch Stars came standard on a Freightliner chassis with a CAT engine and the upgrade was to a Spartan Mountain Master chassis with a Cummins engine. Starting about 2005 the Dutch Star was available only on Spartan with Cummins. Now they are going to Freigltliner with Cummins.

All of the Spartan chassis under Dutch Stars had IFS and the earlier model Freightliner chasssis had solid front axles. I don't remember when Freightliner switched to IFS.

There are always some exceptions like in 2005 when Newmar introduced the 43' tag axle Dutch Star. It was originally on a Freightliner, but then they switched to Spartan.

It is difficult comparing chassis. Mountain Master chassis over the years have come with different features acording to models and how Newmar ordered them. So one chassis may have a 12K front axle while another has a 13.2K axle and another may have a 14.6K axle.

IFS = Independent Front Suspension.

I was under the impression that the Mountain Master could be provided to the manufacturer with either straight axle or IFS, but the Mountain Master GT was always IFS. Hence the straight axle on the Ventana, it was the cheaper of the front suspensions on the entry level diesel pusher.

I checked with Spartan. As you said, the Mountain Master chassis could be provided with or without IFS. The only way to check is (1) look under the front of the coach or (2) provide the last 5 digits of the vehicle's VIN to Spartan and they'll look it up.

Didn't ask about the MM GT.

Don't trust the 2007 advertising from Spartan and Newmar. Spartan's Mountain Master ME was advertised with IFS but Newmar downgrades the chassis to solid axle without changing thier advertising to reflect the downgrade. I was misslead by this and it caused a lot of greef in the first week of ownership.
Look under the coach brfore you buy.

Our 2003 Spartan MM has IFS. That was important to us. If buying, I would be sure and check because they have done things to the Dutch Star lately and in my opinion it is not a real Dutch Star anymore. It might have the letters on it somewhere that spells Dutch Star but the price was getting out of hand and they cheapened it up.
