Spartan compared to Freightliner

A while back I asked if you would buy another Newmar, and a few folks replied that they would as long as it had a Spartan Chassis instead of the Freightliner, that is now being used in some of the models. i.e. the Dutch Star line.

Since I'm new to all of this was curious as to the difference and just how much better the Spartan is compared to the Freightliner.

Thanks Trap

Never drove a Sparten chassis, but I now have a 2011 Newmar Dutch Star with the Freightliner XCR chassis and the "ZF" ISF, (independent front suspension) and "Comfort Drive" steering.
I have no complains on the ride. It rides miles better then my former 05 KSDP with the XC chassis and the fixed front axle.

I've had a DSDP on a freightliner chassis and now have a MADP on a Spartan chassis, frankly I can't see any particular difference.

Both chassis are good, each has strong points and probably their weak points.

The chassis should not make a difference with a purchase.

Boy, that's one of those "and then the fight started" questions!? It certainly has to be on of the most hotly debated questions amongst DP owners. I'm a Spartan Guy, period. I can give you lots of reasons why I am but there will be a Frieghtliner Guy who will rebut every one of my points, and mean it. Not to sound smart or anything but, the best way to answer that question is to go to a Dealer(s) who have both and drive them! I could not disagree more with the statement(s) that the chassis "should not influence your decision". That's like buying a house without any concern for the foundation, and you have to drive this foundation. We are in our fifth mothorhome and there is a difference in the way they all handle and "feel". Given the amount of time you may spend behind the wheel of yours make sure you have driven each of them before deciding. One consideration is that, generally speaking, you will find Spartans have the two stage engine brake on many more models than Freightliner, who relies more on the exhaust brake instead. If you spend much time in mountains or hilly terrain this can make a difference. Drive 'em. Good luck with your shopping.

Spartan discontinued the MM, Mountain Master, chassis so Newmar now has the FL under the DSDP,KSDP & VDP to take MM's place.
Some owners at the time were unhappy with the FL but maybe that will change.
Biggest concern was the maintenance of FL chassis and their shops to handle it.

I have a Spartan Mountain Master (altered by Winnebago to a semi-monoque chassis). It handles and rides great. For what it's worth, I have heard many Freightliner owners talk about installing steering stabilizer systems, but not much of that from Spartan owners. If I were buying a new coach, I would look for a Spartan chassis, but much more important would be a side radiator...

007 Spartan will be distressed to learn that they have discontinued the Mountain Master Chassis!! In fact it is quite alive and well, apparently Newmar just chose not to use it for what ever reason. I have a new coach with the MM chassis. I think the main difference is service. Freightliner dealers are notorious for delaying rvs in getting in and out of their shops and Spartan bends over backwards to get their owners chassis serviced. Another difference is all of the Spartan Chassis are side radiator and many of the FL chassis are rear radiators. I prefer the side radiator and the Spartan Chassis, all just my opinion.

Anybody taking bets it wasn't about cost? According to this webpage: Newmar Motorhome & RV Chassis Info | Newmar Corporation, you have to buy an ESSEX or above to get a Spartan under a 2011 Newmar. And those are K series, so it appears Newmar dropped using the MM, not necessarily discontinued by Spartan. Roger, you're forgiven! Ed

Everyone I've talked to says Spartan is preferred over Freightliner. But... it can cost $50,000 more too.

Seriously, $50,000? How could Spartan stay in business if they can't compete when comparing features "apples to apples"???

50g's is what I've been told that a Spartan chassis can cost over a Freightliner. Maybe others and confirm or deny.
