Speaker Install Update

I had previously replaced the 2 inch square speakers installed by Newmar with these because they fit in the existing space quite well.

Pioneer TS-D1002R 4" 2-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com

They sound about as good as a 4" speaker can. (I now have 6 that I don't need anymore, so let me know if you want them)

But I am pretty picky about sound quality and really wanted to upgrade the speakers, but very hesitant because once you start cutting the ceiling there is no going back. And I wanted to finish putting in a new wood floor first.

I took the time to actually listen to a few different sets of ceiling speaker, and really liked the Boston Acoustics the best, but they were too big (mounting depth).

I ended up purchasing these speakers.

HD-R65 In-Ceiling Speakers

They sound as good or better than just about all the other speakers that I was able to listen to, and the company just happens to be about 15 miles from my work so I had a chance to talk with them personally. My biggest concerns was making sure they would fit. They said if I couldn't get them installed then I could bring them back with no problem.

The installation was actually very easy. If you remove the existing speakers you can check & measure the clearance above the ceiling to be sure. Then just mark the cut out circle with their template, use a dremel with a cutting bit and it slices through the ceiling very easily. There is plenty of depth to be able to mount these speakers as they only require about 3 inches of space. They also have a very easy mounting system with tabs that secure them as you tighten the screws on the front of the speaker.

In the front there were two support braces above the ceiling close together that made the positioning more critical. Before I started cutting the ceiling I needed to be sure the width of the speakers was not too much, and measured through the existing hole as best I could. It was very close, but I was able to just barely squeeze the speakers between them. (They do make another speaker that is a bit smaller, so would have used them if needed)

How do they sound? Well you won't mistake them for the Klipsch La Scala, but they do sound good enough that I am looking to install a few in my home.

Is this for your dash radio or the entertainment system in the main living area?

Entertainment system. I'm powering this with a Marantz 1501 because it is part of their "slim line", wasn't expensive and will actually fit in the cabinet over the driver's seat.

How much do you want for the Pioneer speakers? I might be interested.

This is pretty old but here goes. I have a 40' mountain aire. it originally came with a sony system that someone simply took I guess. i have a few pairs of blk and white wires and assume they go to the surround speakers. do you think the marrantz will work with those speakers and the existing sub woofer?

The Marrantz receiver will work. Now it's not a "top end" piece of electronics, but because we don't use our coach a lot, I decided it was good enough. The newer ones have some great features as well.

Also, a primary reason I got it was because it is a slim unit and would fit in my cabinet without any extra modifications.

Thanks for the response Tom. I can't find anything out about the existing speakers such as impedance values. The coach is an '05 and i assume the speakers are Sony. Can you help with this part? Just trying to avoid a $400 outlay that just starts me down a slope due to a mismatch.

I plan to move my recent truck audio system to the new Insignia. It consists of a single din HU Pioneer DEH 80prs, Hertz audio speaker component system (mid woofer and tweeter). That will be powered by a JL audio 600hd amp bridged (300 watts/channel).
Then I will install a set of 8" woofers (brand yet to be determined) and power that with an amp yet to be determined. Probably something around 700 watts. Finally I will power my two JL 10wv3 sub woofers with my JL500-1 sub amp. This coach will rock!

I like my sound, which is probably why I'm half deaf

Post a picture. If they are the speakers I originally had, then they are probably 8 ohm
