I have an 04 DSDP. When driving, power steering is fine. When backing out of spots(driveway, campgrounds) and stopped and changing gears with low rpm, it's like there is no power stearing. Once I put in gear and up the RPM's it "loosens up". I don't think this is normal. Kind of like the old days. What do you all think??? Thanks

Hi mercerc44,
Looking for the cheap and easy solution first, have you checked the hydraulic fluid level? Have you changed the fluid recently?

It did hit me that I should have checked it again. Have looked there earlier in ownership but seemed OK,will do another check. It's been like it is now (driving wise)since it was new to us last Feb.

Also, if the fluid level is fine, you might want to replace the filter in the system.

For everybody's information and amusement, there is a lot of steering-related stuff at trucksteering.com.

I changed the fluid and the 2 filters last year. It was an easy job. The hardest part was trying to figure out how to route the fluid from the drain plug to the catch pan, on the ground, without it running all over the engine bay. I ended up just breaking loose the filter under the tank and the fluid drained straight into the catch pan.
I got the fluid (AW ISO 46) at Tractor supply. It came in 2 gallon containers.
When you replace the filter that is in the tank, you need to pay attention to the way it is held in place. I remember reading that you could possibly put some thing back together, out of order or upside down. Don't recall exactly, but it was pretty straight forward.
The proper method is to purge the system of all hydraulic fluid. I didn't do that. I just drained the tank and changed the 2 filters.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll check into all of this when I have more time.
