Another mile up the road they did it again so I stopped and repeated the open/slam and they stored again and remained so the rest of the way . My question is what can I do to prevent this ? Anyone else have this happen and how did you ensure it stopped ? Any easy way to install a lockout toggle switch ? Thanks in advance for any and all help .

In the panel on the passenger side you will have a switch for the steps. In the On position the steps are active each time the door is Opened/closed as in traveling when you want them to retract when you close the door.
In the Off position, the steps will extend and stay extended while you are parked with the ignition Off. If you turn on the ignition and close the door, they will still retract.
There is a Magnetic Switch in the door frame that controls the steps when the door is opened/closed according to the position of the overhead switch and the ignition.
In your case, if they are extending with the door closed, I suspect you have a poor ground issue or the magnetic switch is loose or faulty. Attached is a Kwikee manual that outlines trouble shooting.
First thing I would do is crawl under, find the ground wire, remove it, clean it and reinstall. Also while you're there, lubricate All Pivot Points with a good spray lube Like CRC or Boshield T9. WD40 will help for a short time but it tends to dissipate quickly since its main purpose is a Water Dispersant as opposed to a lubricant.
CAUTION, be careful when working on the steps as they can cause serious harm if you get your hands caught. Turn the inside switch OFF, Ign Off and do not activate the door while working on the steps.
