Recently I went outside to get in the coach in the late afternoon. It was hot outside and the sun was beating down on the right side of the coach. The steps wouldn't open. Other electric works, and the coach will start. I took off what appears to be ground wires and cleaned them up. That didn't help. The steps work fine in the cool morning. We're going on a short trip next week and will see how they work while on the road. Makes a long step to get up into the coach when they won't deploy. We have a 2011 Bay Star 2901.

Here is a link to step information.
Take a look at your magnetic switch on screen door the wiring to it with wire connectors maybe tucked behind door casing.
There will be a switch on your brake switch that if you lift brake pedal and have someone open door to see if steps move out. That switch may need adjustment.

It may be that temperature was changeing the alignment/position of the switch. Putting a new one in may have changed the postion slightly.

Just went out and tried the door. Steps didn't deploy. I tapped the magnetic switch with my finger and they opened. Closed and opened door again. Steps didn't deploy. Tapped switch again and they opened. So obviously the switch is bad. Curious why warmth from sun hitting that side of coach would make a difference. I guess I'll get it replaced at some time. I will try to contact Kwikee since that will probably be faster than going through Newmar. One problem is that I can't find where wire comes out on other side so I can splice a new one in. Thanks for your input. Another problem with my new coach.

Like I said check the wire nuts behind the door casing and make sure wires are stripped and a good connection made.
You may be able to get mag switch parts at a dealer or PPL.COM.

007 - I can trace where the wire goes into the wall, but can't find the other side where any wire nuts would be.

Where the wires go into wall can you a hole or is it just a slot?
Is wiring near a cabinet possible it maybe in there.
My wires go into wall but wires for switch are dress behine the door casing with the wire nuts than wire to step goes through wall and down to step.
Those wire nuts can be causing your problem if you have them or a poor wiring splice.

Padre44,
I had a similar issue in that I had to frequently had to tap the switch to get the the steps to extend. At the International in Goshen last year I checked with the Newmar parts folks at the rally, including Jeanie. They had what they said was the correct switch. I wasn't in any rush to install it, but on thrs, before the morning before the noon closing of parts decided to install the $35 switch.
Spliced the new switch in to the existing wiring. To my great amazement when the door closed the steps extended, when the door opened the steps retracted. I reversed the wiring, checked the ext step switch on the overhead, the steps still operated in reverse.
Rushed back to parts as they were closing they insisted they had provided the correct switch according to the build sheet for 05's. I don't remember whether I got a "in" or an "out" switch, but I needed the other one, they mailed the right one to me a week or so later and it only was $17.
The moral of this is there are two switches and you may get the wrong one.

Allynne -
Thanks. Since my name is Murphy the law seems alive and well with my coach.
007 -
I'll keep looking, thanks.
