Curious how you were able to run the wiring to the monitor into your control cabinet over the door? How did you route the cable? I think thats exactly what I would like to do.

I would think that with all of those electrical devices mounted in that cabinet that it would be easy to find the wire channel and just follow the same path.

However, I will let the poster you posed the question to tell you exactly how he accomplished the task.

JT they have a clear document on the Progressive website of what is not considered a warranty item. In other words items from customer actions. One of those is improperly plugging in and out of the portable unit causing arcing in the contact connections. Mine fell into that category.

Lesson from that, after three years of use, is to leave the cable and surge protector connected if possible to reduce the number on connects/disconnects. Might be one reason to go to a hardwired or portable mounted in the electrical bay like some folks do.

Ok, was just curious what the situation was. Thanks.

For those of you using a portable Progressive Surge Protector, which one do most of you find sufficient and convenient? And for the price?

SSP-50X for $139
SSP-50XL for $151.85
EMS-PT50X for $453

Without being able to physically examine each one it's kind of hard to know which one to order.

When I ordered my Bay Star I asked for 3 conduits one from the solar/inverter controllers and battery compartment to the kitchen cabinet next to the door and 2 from the 120 volt breakers to the inverter compartment. It made the job much easier, but took a lot or research and planning before the RV order was submitted to Newmar.

The first two are basically over rated surge protectors ONLY. Yes they will light up if there is some other problem with the pedestal. However, it won't do anything about it. That's left up to you!

Let's say that you plug in one of the first two listed above and all is OK. Then two days later it is 95 degrees with 95% humidity outside and everyone in the RV Park has 2-3 A/C's running flat out. This will cause the park voltage to drop quite often below the safe operating threshold. You are now running your A/C's with a very low voltage which will cause problems in the compressor motor. Maybe not then but someday later on when your A/C quits cooling you are now wondering what the heck happen!

With any of the EMS models, when that power condition occurs the device will trip the relay severing the errant power condition to your coach until which time the power returns to safe conditions.

Plus it checks for high voltage conditions, high and low power frequency conditions, proper grounding and neutral conditions, etc. If ANY of those go out of specs the device severs the errant power condition until it returns to a safe condition.

Power surges are the least of your worries when hooked to shore power. It's all of the ones listed above that can do lots of damage if left unattended.

Received my EMS hard wired 30 amp progressive unit and when we get to the MH will install it. Read thru all the posts and realized the troubles you can have. Thanks for the insight..

Dr4Film,

This is the best explanation of the operation I've seen. I have already decided to purchase this EMS system.

The Progressive unit is available on Amazon through Independence RV in Winter Garden for $312.00. To me a great discount from a reputable Newmar Dealer with a highly rated service team.

I would double check to make sure of the model and price. That $312 is unheard of for an EMS portable model EMS-PT50X unless they have it on a super discount price.

I just realized my original post might have sounded like I only had one remote at the EMS in side the coach. I also have a remote near the unit for use during hook up.

He's talking about the hardwired model, not the portable. $312 is a good price for the hardwired unit too.
