Coming out of Phoenix on the way to Flaggstaff the temp was around 110 degrees. On two of the long uphill inclines the warning light came on and the temp was approaching 124 degrees. The antifrezze was checked and seem ok. This is the first time this happened, however, it is not usually this hot. Is it normal for this to happen ?

In the Summer, when I make that drive, I shut the dash a/c and turn on the genset and house a/c; thus, engine runs cooler.

Robert,

I think you meant to say the temperature was 224 degrees. The check engine light will come on at about 220 degrees. As mentioned, turn the dash air conditioner off and that will help a little. For a quick and temporary cool down turn the dash temperature to hot and you will see a quick drop in temperaturn before it starts inching back up. That may be all the help needed to get you over the mountain. You may overheat, but your engine won't.

The biggest help is to keep the engine rpm high. You don't say what engine you have, but I assume it's a Cummins ISL? If an ISL keep the rpm at least 2100 rpm by down shifting and don't worry about your speed. Just watch the tach and keep it at 2100 rpm or higher.
