The Xite Radio is History!!

I was okay with the Clarion in my previous DS, but this Xite radio is really an inferior radio and GPS unit. I feel like I was sold a bill of goods. For the cost of the upgrade to the Xite radio, I could buy two high end radios.

I replaced it with a Kenwood Echelon 994S AM/FM/Sirius/GPS unit. I narrowed down my search to one of the Pioneer NEX radios and this Kenwood unit. The Kenwood comes with Garmin navigation, which was the deciding factor in my choice.

Removing the Xite and installing the Kenwood is pretty straight forward. If you first identify wires you won't be using and tape them off, then just match the color coded wires, it's a straight across install. When I turned the new unit on, no sound. I knew it had something to do with the base and amp and then figured out what the one left over blue wire did....it triggered the amp.

The Sirius Connect vehicle tuner was already installed by Newmar and plugs into the new Kenwood. Since I had already had Sirius, the Sirius portion of the radio worked immediately because the coding is in the Sirius Tuner.

The only thing that didn't fit was the GPS sat antenna that came with the Xite radio. It's got a different end than the Kenwood. I just used the Kenwood antenna and will see how it works just laying on the dash.

I'm very happy with the new unit....most adjustments are intuitive, so easy to operate right off the bat.

You can just tape the gps antenna under the dash as far forward as you can and it will be fine. That's what I did and never an issue. I hear it's common that way in cars too.

Does the Kenwood allow you to enter your coach specs to ensure that you donít go where you shouldnít?

Yes....it has Apple Car play.

It plays video, but I don't know what would be required to play the 360 camera, as I don't have that system.

No, it doesn't let you enter your coach specs. Personally, I find that a useless feature and is more trouble than it's worth. In all the years that GPS has been available and I've owned one, I've never been taken down a road with a low bridge or a road that didn't have an outlet. As a matter of fact, I had a GPS where you could input the RV size and that caused more errors and lead me on more roundabout paths than any other unit.

The Xite Radio is History!!

In my measly 20 months I have had at least 1 low bridge warning when getting off an exit to get gas and a weight limit warning in a detour. It may be fine on a planned route but when it wants you once you deviate itís a relief. Youíre safe on highways. Once off of that all bets are off.

Ignorance is not bliss. Ask the LADP owner at Newmar with no roof.

Sorry. Canít agree on this sentiment here. Have to keep it real. Be safe.

Check out the Kenwood DNX765RVS. Just came out the first of the year and might be another option. I'm trying to order one now.

Agree that like the Advantium oven, itís an overpriced option. However, I havenít had any issues since my local dealer did a firmware upgrade.

With all do respect,

Just measly 4 months and 3600 miles, 1 low bridge (with work arround), 1 overweight (near home and bridge was just replaced last year, was limited) and 1 sharp curve alert at night that might have saved the coach. I'll stick with the inferior XITE with Rand McNally

Plus the 360 View has made parking at a site (pull-in, back-in or pull through with obstacles) unbelievably easy.

I guess I've just been lucky over the past 30 years, 150K miles with GPS use and two coast to coast trips. The only thing I want a GPS to warn me about are toll roads, which they do, but can't always be avoided.

Again, personal opinion, if you drive under a bridge that is too low, you probably shouldn't be driving an RV. Pretty obvious, BIG BRIDGE, looks low, maybe I should check!!!!!

Nice unit Don. I installed a Pioneer NEX in the KStar because I wanted the Android Auto and Waze navigation App. I have it in the Mercedes and of course the Canyon. You get so used to having it that when it's not there I'm lost. BTW the KStar is for sale.
