Tire Covers

Has anyone noticed higher tire temperatures when using black tire covers versus white or lighter color covers?

A black object (tire cover) absorbs all wavelengths of light and converts them into heat, so the object gets warm and can transfer heat to another object (tire). A white object reflects all wavelengths of light, so the light is not converted into heat and the temperature of the object does not increase noticeably.

That would assume someone has one wheel covered with black and another covered with white and they are both subject to the same amount of sunshine. Not going to happen!
Who in their right mind would use black anyway?

MagneShade does. They use the same black cloth for the tire covers as their window shades. Mine shipped yesterday and are supposed to be delivered on the 30th.

Curious question, do you all use tire covers on short stays or only when your stationary for a while? I’m not full time and park inside when not using the MH, not sure I would get enough benefit, or is it a cosmetic thing also? Thank you Stuart

I always used them if parked for a while at home or campground and also parked on 3/4 plywood board under foot print of tires.
Traveling no I did not use them.
Got good wear and years on my tires, last MH 10 years on drive tires and they went a 1000 miles to new owners home before they were changed.

I had white tire covers, but this time I went for black. Got to thinking about black absorbing heat. Never got the chance to find out, cause I lined the insides (tire covers) with bubble wrap. Haven't noticed any heat, yet.

Won't black dry out your side walls of tire sooner with SUN hitting them?

Tire Covers

Tire expert says....We asked industry expert, Marvin Bozarth, about how to best protect tires from UV light. Mr. Bozarth is the Tire Industry Association (of America) technical expert. Marvin noted that indeed, black actually absorbs UV radiation, therefore stopping UV from getting through to a tire covered with a black cover; white (and other colors) unless especially treated to block UV rays will pass them through.
Black looks better in my opinion, but depends on the color of the coach. I like the Magna Shade ones that still show the wheel.

I see many using black and dark gray to match their rig colors I assume.

From a cosmetic standpoint I want to use black because our rig is darker shades and they would be a good match. White wouldn't be a good look.
I wouldn't care what color the covers are when the rig is in storage but for our multi-month snowbird stay it would look much better with darker covers.

I was hoping someone else may have had the same thought and at some point used their temperature sensor "gun" and experimented with light and dark colored covers.

Anyone use hanging shades? While looking for a new to us coach last winter, owner showed us his wheel shades. These were made of the same mesh material found on outside window shades and they attached to the coach with large suction cups and has a weight rod that slides into a pocket in the fabric. They cover the wheel well area, allow ventilation around the tires, while keeping the sun out! Long time sailor and have a Sailrite sewing machine that I will put to use to copy these covers. Easy project!

I used the slip on covers initially (white) and recently bought the Magne shade tire covers. I really like the magne shade covers, they take up less room in storage, easy to install, and look better. In addition, the slip on covers may trap moisture causing rotting and invite critters to a nice moist home awaiting you when you take them off.
