Toad brakes or not??

I lost my air connection on my SMI brakes between the DS and my 18 Jeep JL. I can drive the 650 mike home on flat coastal Terran without toad braking, or wait till Fri and have a replacement line.

I have talked to 2 people in the past hour that do not have toad braking at all.

Thoughts/Opinions?

Just hope you don't have an accident and the police get involved.

I'd wait for replacement. Too many nuts out on the roads and all the braking one can get is desirable. Other option if two of you is one drive Jeep.

The main concern is the break away. Otherwise you won’t even notice no brakes. I say just go.

You are kidding right? I mean my coach is a bit bigger and heavier than yours and I can tell when I need to stop fast.

I picked up my coach in FL. and hooked up wifes 2016 Cherokee. We drove up to Canada , across to WA. and back to CA. with no toad braking. I can't tell it's even there. I do intent to add them. I would not think twice about driving home.

If the connections on the vehicle and motorhome are still good you can take each one off and take it to a local hydraulic shop. Get a standard 3/8" push to connect fitting that has the same thread as each side. They may have different threads.

Then also get 3/8" PVC line long enough to reach each connection plus a foot or two.

Thread each one in, connect the line and drive on. If you need to disconnect you push the ring in and pull the line out.

When your new line arrives put the quick disconnects back in and you are good to go. Also order a spare and keep it in your car.

Consider the worst possible consequences and weigh if you are comfortable with the outcome. If you have an accident and cause major damage or death, can you afford it if your insurance company will not cover you as you were operating knowingly illegally. If you are financially capable of withstanding a potentially large judgement while operating essentially uninsured then you should be fine.

If you have a large coach and a small toad your drive will probably be fine without without the brakes - which is why a number of people do it. However, I'm personally not comfortable with the exposure. It sounds like you are not in that much of a rush. I would suggest you wait and either do as Mark D suggests or your Friday solution.

[moderator edit] Your insurance is there to protect you even if you do something stupid or illegal. It's illegal to speed, it's illegal to run red lights, people do illegal things all the time and cause accidents. Do you think it invalidates their insurance? It would be illegal to have insurance that didn't cover you when you were driving at the insurance company's whim.

Not to mention the stress you're putting on the tow bar. I would wait especially if you're not in any hurry to get home.
