Hey, Newmar Gang: Gotta return...(sing it) "back home, to Indiana" (Nappanee) from Florida, for May 18th appt. How much do we have to worry about tornados along the way and particularly while in Nappanee?? Steve & Lynette

I have not had any tornado warnings/watches during my several visits to Nappanee, however I've had too many tornado watches/warnings here in Florida. Fortunately, all were unfounded.

I agree with Route 66 that tornadoes weren't a problem for the 3 times that we have been at Newmar. That being said - there was a severe tornado in Nappanee a few years ago.

We always travel with a weather alert radio, set to the area where we are camping. They are cheap insurance.

Hi Steve,

The subject has also been at the back of my mind, since we'll be in the heart of tornado country starting in April and we also have an appointment at Newmar on 5/18 to replace the wall behind the shower and possibly the floor too from a leaking shower pipe.

Normally spring and early summer have the highest incident of tornados, but with weather patterns changing they seem to occur anytime during the year now when conditions are right. The map at the following link shows that area of the country has a high occurance and we all know they've had a direct hit in Oct, 07:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tornado_Alley

Most areas that get a lot of tornadoes have siren warning systems. I don't know if Nappanee does, so having a weather radio is a good idea.

See ya in May,

Sue

When you are in Indiana in the spring you should always be alert for tornados. Most towns, large and small, have tornado sirens that will be set off if a tornado is spotted or weather conditions are present that indicate a probable tornado. You should have a plan in place to evacuate your coach and get to a proper shelter. Enjoy your stay in Indiana and be sure to stop at Das Duchman Essenhaus at Middlebury.. Indiana Journey

Has was indicated in a previous post, Nappanee was hit in Oct'07 by a twister. It wiped out the Gulf Stream factory and numerous other commercial places on the east side of town.
No water or power for several days. We arrived 2 days after it hit and saw the damage first hand. Newmar was spared except for the loss of utilities.

The best advice we can give is to watch the local channels. If there are any kind of warnings or watches they will know before the sirens go off. We were there in Oct 07 when Nappannee was hit. Also, be sure to locate the shelters before hand.

THANKS ALL for your input. Guess we'll just keep the weather radio on and dodge any storms.

Hi, Sue(saydiver): How's River Bend. Yup, looks like we'll be neighbors again for awhile up in Nappanee. We'll be heading North around May 11th or so. When ya heading North? What route? See ya in Amishland!! Steve & Lynette

We try to get a state map and note the names of the counties surrounding our location. That way if a storm warning comes up, you will have an idea of where the storm in and where it is heading.

I am a amateur radio operator and had the Sky Warn training and do not place much faith in the NOAA weather service radio or bulletins for fast developing or moving storms. Best to keep up with the long range forecast and decide if you want to keep a closer eye on the weather or not.

We like RiverBend and are really enjoying our long stay and beautiful view, but our next trip to Florida we're going to move around more and spend some time in the Keys. We leave RB on 3/29. We have some photos of RB on our website:

http://www.flyingdiver.com/blo...travel2008/riverbend

We start heading north on 3/29. We're not sure of our exact route yet, except for stopping at Ft Wilderness for several days and also stopping in the Little Rock area.

See ya in May,

Sue

Last year when we left Tampa East end of March and went up to the factory [had May 3rd] from down south our only problem was Tornados along the way.
Our route took us over to Texas than north Little Rock--Branson--Kansas City--Chicago.
We were following Tornados all the way except for one in Arkansas about 3 miles away as the crow flies.
Say hello to Surge and Liss from Barbara & Joe.
