Towing with a Dutch Star or MADP?

Anyone towing a heavy trailer or stacker with a Dutch Star or even a Mountain Aire can share their experience? I know someone who has a stacker, about 12-13K lbs and wants to know if the 450 hp engine (DS) is good enough. I know it is listed for 15k towing, would like to hear real experiences. thank you.

I tow a 9,000 lb enclosed trailer containing my 3,000 lb sand rail and all the stuff needed to go to the sand dunes. I know it's there but it's no problem towing the weight. I have a 450 HP Cummins in my Dutch Star 4369 and I think my mileage is pretty much the same as when I haul my GMC Terrain.

Sure the DSDP will do it but in the slow lane in the mountains.

Mr D, Did you expect it would go 70 MPH ? With that much weight it's prudent to stay between 60 and 62 MPH while towing the trailer. The trailer has brakes but it's still a lot of weight to stop in an emergency

Rd1 has a friend with a coach powered by a 450 HP Cummins. I seriously doubt he's going run out and buy a new coach with more HP to tow his trailer. He asked if it would pull the weight, the answer is yes.

I tow a 24 ft stacker weighing out at 14500lbs. My 500 hp pulls it with no trouble.

To answer the question I think the OP is asking, yes, the Dutch Star will do the job. You'll run all day at 60 mph - 65 mph without issue. You'll be looking at mileage in the mid 6 to an occasional low 7 mpg. On 6% grades or better, you'll probably be down to the mid 40's, with that load. I find my Dutch Star with the 450HP runs differently than my Diplomat with the 400HP. The Diplomat hill climbing speed was proportional to the steepness of the grade. The Dutch Star seems to get to a certain speed on mine (45-48) on grades 6% or greater where it just doesn't matter......it just chugs along like a locomotive, neither slowing or going any faster.

Hope this answers your question.

I believe the Mountain Aire comes with the small ISX, so I'm guessing that extra umph would be noticeable with the loads you're looking at. I think eventually, Newmar will have to offer the Dutch Star with the ISX. I believe Tiffin is offering it in their 43' Allegro Bus for 2018. For power guys like me, that would be enough to make me change brands.

Out here in the west with place like Lake Tahoe and going to Seattle it sure is nice to have 500HP and 1550 lbs. 450/1250 OK but 40 mph for a long run isn't for a lot of Newmar owners.

I'm assuming the Dutchstar with 500 and 4000 transmission would be north of +$50000

Towing with a Dutch Star or MADP?

As far as I know the big difference between the DS (450 hp ISL, Allison 3000) and the MA (500 hp ISX, Allison 4000) is the upgraded engine and transmission.

With that said, my DS will tow my 8600 lbs Ram diesel plus cargo at 70+ mph with no problem. I usually stick to 65 and do quite well on grades until i run into a slow truck.

I was going to post over on the Entegra section to your question, but I will post here......I tow a 10k MTI trailer with a 350 ISC and it does a wonderful job, even on the big hills.......your 450 will not have any trouble.......enjoy the ride.
Back when I started driving truck, I started out in a old White with a 238 Detroit in it, and loaded it up with a little over 52k for a total of 80k...........I was behind the big motor's on a trip by 20 minutes from the docks in Cleveland to Warren,Pa. The big trucks with the big motors did not carry the payload I did due to their weight, so it took me 20 more minutes but I made more money.......

Those old slow diesel days ended when all the black smoke stop coming out of the exhaust. There are choice today that will get you out of the unsafe driving position.

I don't understand your statement Tom? What is unsafe about something that goes slower than others with bigger engine's?
