It may be something simple like 007 suggested, but because it worked when you pushed the contacts in I suspect the drive circuit may not be working.
I assume you have two big contactors (another name for a big relay) in your transfer switch and you were pushing the set of contacts on the contactor that goes to the shore power cord connections when it worked (obviously very carefully with something insulating).
The coil of that contactor should have about 120VDC on it when it is trying to close when shore power is applied (probably after a delay), if it does then you have a bad contactor, otherwise you have a bad circuit board. I've found the contactors at electronics supply houses like Allied Electronics or Newark, but for the circuit board you have to go to the transfer switch mfr or buy a new transfer switch.
