Trouble replacing dump valves on DSDP
Hi All
I have a "new to us 2000 DSDP" that is needing to have the dump valves replaced. I have been trying to replace them without removing the "wall" in the wet bay. I am assuming that I am going to be forced to remove the wall to get good access to the valves. I have the 3" replaced it is the 1 1/2" that is giving me the trouble. It looks as if I will have to drain the fresh water tank (the other two tanks are empty already of course). It sure seems that having to disconnect the two water lines on the hot water bypass in order to remove the wall is going to be a pain.
Is there a better or easier way???
Thanks
Ken

Ken.....First, I like to use a 1/4" socket set with extensions to remove the four bolts. Don't be afraid to pry a little on the plumbing to spread it far enough to pull the valve out.
Many have an issue reinserting the valve without knocking off the o'rings on both sides. If you take a plastic milk carton and cut the sides out, you can sandwich the new valve and o'rings between two pieces of the milk carton sides and then insert it into place. Once it's centered, pull out the two pieces of plastic. This will keep the o'rings from being knocked off.

I can't visualize how to use the milk carton... and will need to replace my gray tank valve or gaskets soon since mine is leaking.

You cut two 4" x 6" panels out of the milk carton sides. The new valve has an o'ring on each side. Many have a difficult time sliding the new valve into place, between the pipes, without knocking the o'rings off. By placing the plastic on both sides of the valve, it will slip easily between the pipes without knocking the o'rings off. Once the valve is in place, pull the milk carton pieces out.

Side note to Don's great idea, spread a little Vasoline or O Ring grease on the O Rings to help keep them in place and allow the plastic to slide out easy once you have the valve in place.

I used a little dab of plumbers grease to hold the O ring in place. Milk carton is an innovative way that I like. I don't understand the wall removal comment. On our 2000 DSDP both valves are right there in the wet bay easily gotten to.

I tried Dutch Star Don's suggestion and it worked perfectly.
We had one of those cutting pads made of some sort of plastic (the material was close to the plastic milk jug material) except is was nice and flat. (It was also about to be replaced with a new one).
I cut a strip just wide enough to cover the 1 1/2" valve opening without covering the 4 mounting holes. I left the strip long enough to cover both sides and around one end of the valve and long enough to extend almost up to the valve handle. I used some painters tape to hold the two ends around the valve.
I inserted the valve and aligned all 4 mounting holes and inserted the mounting bolts with mounting nuts on just a little. Once all the mounting bolts where in I unwound the tape and pulled the plastic out the backside of the valve and then tightened the bolts and NO LEAKS AND WORKS PERFECT.
Thanks again Don
