Two slide out topper questions

First, is the driverís topper supposed to leave about 2Ē of fabric exposed as seen in the below picture?

Second, the passenger topper closes with a loud snap as seen on the video. The metal casing seems to get pinched and reduced in diameter and then pops out at the end. I donít think is normal, what is the adjustment or fix?

Thanks

In your video it looks like the anti-unfurl bracket is hanging up and then releasing with the pop you are hearing.
As far as the exposed area, that's probably normal. It would be nice if it was covered and out of the sun and weather.
Happy Glamping.

From the input from Newmar, tension needs to added to the spring to keep the fabric taunt. Anyone have instructions otherwise Iíll need to call a mobile RV service.

I would talk with Girard, they are very good with tech support. If you are unable to accomplish yourself they may be able to make recommendations on mobile support

My Girard slide covers took a special tool to tension them. Could have made one but ordered it direct from Girard. Cost was a little less than $30.
Check the Stone Vos website for instructions on tensioning the fabric. I replaced all 4 of my slide covers using their fabric and instructions.

Re: the passenger topper

Does that topper have a center support cradle? If so, watch and see if the roller is hanging up on the cradle which then allows the unfurl lever to catch under the the unfurl contact bracket.

Looks like a Carefree topper to me and those center support cradles can cause all sorts of problems. One of the issues with them is they snag the edge of the metal weather guard and prevent the roller from turning just as the slide nears full retract.

I took our coach to a service location today and they still werenít able to fix the problem with the snapping metal cover/casing as shown in the video. He tighten the tension four revolutions and while it improved it still snaps at the end. What we think is that the metal casing is not as flexible as it once was andcthe hinges are binding a little bit. So that the casing stays curved rather than flattening out with the awning is extended. Has anyone ever lubricated the metal casing that comes around the fabric when the awning is fully retracted?

Never heard of a metal weather shield needing lubrication. I'd be surprised if that's the issue but you never know.

Mine was catching on the center cradle to the point it had bent the end mounting brackets close enough to the slide that the roller would catch on the top of the slide flange. I had to replace the topper mounting brackets and place a spacer under them to hold the topper far enough out from the slide flange.

It is still under warranty but the brackets were only $65. That's less than I would have spent on fuel taking it to a dealer so I just did it myself.

I assume you had them remove those 4 extra turns on the tension spring since they didn't resolve the problem. That puts a lot of unnecessary pressure on the the topper mounting hardware.

It just so happens that I felt my bedroom slide was making too much noise just before it fully closed. I went up and sprayed WD40 (as a test) where those aluminum slats, at the end of the fabric, interlock with each other. It quieted mine down substantially. Those slats are binding up as they get to the final closed position.

Thanks Don. That did the trick. To others, if you hear a load snapping sound in the last 4Ē of closing either your sori g tension needs increasing (2 person job with those experienced with slide toppers) and/or you need to lubricate the aluminum cover. You can test the cover by grabbing the fabric when the slide is 6Ē out and turning the fabric so the cover flexs. If the cover squeaks it probably needs lube. I used WD 40 like Don. Dry Lube was recommended by the service place which Iíll buy for future use. I think road spray builds up in the cover and it is not something that gets washed so it is slightly like your step mechanics being susceptible to binding.

To lube take easy sprays on a 3 foot section with a rag in hand careful not to get your paint and then wipe the cover down and repeat for the whole cover.

Aluminum will gaul/bind on itself. Think I would use dry silicone lubricant - see the link below, no petroleum propellent, so won't leave stain on fabric, it will have to applied more often than WD-40, but such is life. Price has gone up since the last time I ordered it over 2 dollars.

Remember.....I did the WD40 as a test to see if it solved the issue, which it did. Where the metal is binding, is not really close to the cloth, so using a little care and a rag will keep the spray off of the cloth. If you wash your coach often as I do, the area where I sprayed is going to get washed off at some point. For me, spraying those slats will probably be something I do every few months while washing the coach. Use what you have, WD40, silicone, TriFlow or whatever. It's not a critical joint.
