USB Plugs

Just a question on these. I have two (2) styles.

1) The kind that are mounted in the dash next to the 12v plugs
2) The kind that are part of the 110 volt wall receptacles

I just figured out that the ones that are part of the 110 volt wall receptacles will charge my gps unit when plugged in and the kind that are mounted in the dash next to the 12v plugs will not.

Is this normal?

I actually questioned myself on that last night and found that the
ones on the dash go through the
radio for using auxiliary items.

We charge devices with the dash mounted USB. Perhaps the GPS has a higher current requirement? Not all USB have the same output current capacity.

THat's my theory too.
Those USB ports might only be 1.2a

Our Samsung tables require higher amp USB power.supplies and will give us a warning on some USB sources (insufficient power, may take longer to charge. .) but it will charge. Your GPS may have built in protection to keep it from being damaged by trying to operate on too low power.

Just a thought. I had a problem with my gps intermittently working while plugged into the dash usb. After new cord and plug did not solve, I replaced the fuse. That fixed the issue.

USB Plugs

Ok. So. Hereís the problem...

GARMINís GPS units are horribly designed to only charge with a 2A current on USB. This means they wonít charge off a computerís USB port, as well as the standard 12v USB ports like Newmar provided.

Itís totally understandable that the 110v outletís USB ports have a much higher current; definitely above 2A, which is why the Garmin GPS will charge just fine on them.

The reason Apple iOS devices, as well as other similar products, charge on any USB, is because their charging circuits are forgiving to pretty much anything you throw at them.

Garmin will sell you a very expensive car power cord that you can wire into your vehicleís 12v system. Oh yeah, and they caution you to not charge them any other way. Oh brother.

Steve.....the two USB's you have in the photo, run to your radio and are for plugging something in, like a thumb drive, with music loaded on it.

When I replaced my radio, I rewired those to be Samsung fast charge compatible. They work great for my iPad and galaxy s9+.

EXACTLY what I was thinking of doing, RB! You found a dual-port round one? Share what you used, please!

Wondering if this one would work...

Dual USB Charger Socket Power Outlet - Quick Charge 3.0 & 2.4A Port for Car Boat Marine Rv Mobile with Wire Fuse DIY Kit (QC 3.0 - Green) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FLTTXBD..._Z8uTCbD164BSQ

i actually have 2 DUAL port USB plugs at the left side of the driverís console. So, what Iíd like to do is rig one as a USB input to my Radio head, and the other one a high-speed charger like above.

All - Never liked Garman, it took my friend to timbucktoo once. His experience convienced me to use Magellin, it charges off my PC, or the dedicated wall adapter provided in the box, no extra cable needed. Battery Life could be better.

Nice to know about the round USB plug next to the radio, assume this is also good for the DOCK to update the RM maps. Maybe not, dont know enough yet to say. My samsung phone will also charge off my PC usb ports, so assume the ones in the bedroom or PS seating area will work as well. I will know when I get the new rig. Thank you for the information.

USB Plugs

Yeah, ok...so just beware of Newmarís changes on these plugs.

For example, I was a bit disappointed when my rig did NOT have the ďAUX/USBĒ input to the side of my dash like DS Don talks about.

Iíd give you the link to the page on NEWGLE, but it wonít do any good if you donítí have access. So, Iíll just show you the picture of what they install on ĎSOMEí coaches; my presumption would be ones with the XITE radio system installed, since those radios come with USB input.

So, unfortunately, when you donít order the XITE radio, you end up with two DUAL USB charge ports..not connected to the audio system.
