In my quest for the perfect wheel estate, I have been looking at both the Newmar Mountain Aire and Dutch Star models. I can find both in my price range, in both gas & diesel models.

I like the idea of a DP so that I can carry my motorcycle on the back with a lift/carrier as well pull a toad.

I dislike the idea of high PM costs since I will be on a tight fixed income.

I don't plan on high miles per year but this will be my last rig unless I win the lottery (which I don't play ), so I do need it to last.

So, love to hear input, thoughts, ideas, suggestions as to reliability of these two models (years 1999-2003), any years to avoid or special things to watch for as well as whether the added maintenance costs of the DP are worth it in the long run.

TIA!!

To, Froggie Donna,

Hello, and welcome;

As you can see by my signature I own a 2002 Mountain Aire diesel pusher.

I have had 4 other gas moho's.

Because diesels cost more new, the higher cost applys to used.

If you are buying new or used , diesel is the best choice , IF YOU CAN AFFORD THE DIFFERENCE.

Here's why,

Quieter, inside when driving.
More front room because of rear engine.
Better ride becaause of air ride.
Better miles per gallon, after break-in.
More carrying/towing capacity.
More power when loaded when in the high country.
Many more reasons for diesel over gas, but I'm sure you will see more postings.

Dutch Star vs Mountain Aire

On older units, the MA was available with a Spartan chassis which was an extra cost option , Frieghtliner was standard. On the older units only Spartan had INDEPENDANT FRONT SUSPENSION, better handleing, ride and turning.

Costs of DS vs MA=== MA cost more because of engine and chassis and the upscale interior.
If a used DS had higher cost options, engine and chassis then the difference is mostly trim.

I just saw the "07" prices, $250,00 for DS and $299,000 for MA, these are just the base prices.

Hope this info helps and keep us posted with progress and/or problems..

Good luck== Aime== == AJBJRVERS===

Thank you, Aime. I really like what I have seen in both the DS & MA, hoping that I will recognize "my" rig when it comes along.
