I have a new (to me) 2007 MADP....and I love this coach. I am planning to purchase a TPMS and was inspecting all the tire valve stems for installation of the sensors. I noticed the hex nut at the base of the valve stem, where it goes into the wheel. Can someone explain to me the purpose of this....how is the stem secured to the wheel?

The stem is secured to the wheel by that hex nut.

The valve stem has a threaded portion that extends from inside the wheel thru the hole and is secured by that hex nut on the outside. Of course there is a rubber gasket crushed in there as well. Kind of like a regular bolt facing you from inside the wheel and the nut on top (outside). The nut also crushes a rubber seal into the wheel hole making it all airtight.

That makes sense RVDude.....thanks. If the hex nut is loose, does that mean there could be an air leak?

No.

It means there is an air leak.

At least it happened to me. Slow leak caused by loose valve stem nut.

I'd recommend the TST monitoring system - it's great. The only problem I have with it is, they come with locks on them - and they're not terribly easy to get on and off with the little wrench. I've also nicked a couple of the rear wheels with the wrench because of the tight clearance.

When you don't have to add air, it's otherwise a great option. Just wish you didn't HAVE to use a lock, like the PressurePro system.

Lindy....I assume you are talking about those sensors that would go on the inside duals and the front tires. The valve stem is centered in the opening on the wheel...is the clearence that close?

I have also been considering the Hawkshead TPMS. The sensors are a bit smaller and lighter and do not require a locking tool. My only concern with them is that the sensors shutdown after 15 minutes of no motion. I need to check further into this, but I would like the ability to check pressures when parked.

Route 66 has it right, if that nut is loose you will no doubt be seeping air, albeit very slowly. Experience here too. Spray some dish soap bubbles around the nut and wait. Giving the nut a gentle snugging - they are not jammed on tight - would also be prudent.
