Verizon Jetpack Cratered - Suggestions for Replacement

We have the FMCA Verizon Plan. The Jetpack cratered when the lithium battery expanded out of the case. Verizon replacement is outlandish at $199. No warranty since I have been on this plan since January 2018.

Question: Can I purchase a router or other device and transfer the small SIM card from the Jetpack to the new device and not have to be concerned with batteries?

We have had a Verizon Jet Pack for at least 5 years. We always use Costco for all our Verizon business. I know one time we paid less then 5$ for a new Jet Pack. With 90 million people in us as members would suggest a visit there first. For us the Jet Pack has been the answer for us because of all the traveling we do,

Tom,

Thanks for the reply.

This is the second Jetpack battery to expand, I assume it overheated. The first was several years ago on a different Verizon plan. We keep the Jetpack plugged in all the time. I realize that is a no no, but the location makes it difficult to get into and plug and unplug.

I would much prefer to find a different solution without a battery so I am not concerned about a lithium battery overheating.

I'm using a GE Timer (Model 15089) to charge mine a couple times a day for an hour or so I can leave it plugged in. It might work for you if you can't find a model without a battery.

Yes. Get a Pepwave BR1 MK2 per the other threads about internet and put the sim in it and get much better internet.

LK23-

We went on the road in 2015 with a Verizon MHS291L, tethered to a Pepwave Surf SOHO (version 1) router. At the time, the MHS291L was near the top of the line for Verizon. We upgraded in 2018 to a Pepwave Surf SOHO version 3 router, keeping the MHS291L.

This older Verizon hotspot has one neat feature: It can be modified to run without the battery. The hotspot gets power through the USB cable to the router.

I have made that modification. The hotspot's battery stays in a plastic bag, to be swapped in if we every want to take the hotspot away from the coach.

We don't use our Verizon cell plan day-in, day-out. When we do use it, performance seems decent. The system Neal recommends has better specs. If I were to buy a new system (i.e., replace router and hotspot), I'd give it a serious look.

Yes you can pull the SIM out of your current Jetpack and put it in to a different one. BUT only if the two Jetpacks use the same size SIM. I know that they have at least two different sizes, so that's something you have to watch for.

My old Jetpack did the same thing as yours, toasted the battery (I don't think they like to be plugged in all the time). I opted to buy an newer model Jetpack off eBay for a good bit less than what Verizon wanted for the same model. Then I put the new Jetpack (which used a different SIM than my old one) on my account.

Hi LK23,
If the JetPac suits your needs consider this:

But another JetPac. Charge the battery, unplug it and over time run it down. Charge it up again and run it down over time. If you turn it off when not in use the battery, for me, will last a week. I charge my battery during the day and only when I am at the coach. Usually on laundry day. I have more than one Jet Pac for several years. No battery problems.

You could check eBay for another MiFi and just use your SIM, that would be the cheapest option. If you want to take this opportunity to improve your internet, the pepwave is my recommendation but the pepwave with LTE-A is $700.

https://5gstore.com/product/7865_pep...x_br1_mk2.html

Before I used the pepwave I had the MiFi 7730 and then the newer one. They are both sitting in a box I probably should sell them but I used a smart plug to be on 12 hours off 12 hours to prevent this situation. I use a few brands from Wemo, AmazonBasics, and Belkin I think is the other. While I do use Amazon Echo "Alexa" devices most of these have smart phone apps that can control the plugs via their own cloud/internet system, all you need is WiFi and with your MiFi you have that.

I have ordered a Pepwave Max BR1 Mini. I has slots to hold up to two SIM cards and no battery to overheat. I am hoping the external antennae will result in improved Verizon reception.

Max BR1 Mini -

Hi -

We also have the MAX BR1 Mini. We needed a SIM card adapter for the Verizon SIM card, which the company - now the 5GStore, provided. As mentioned, the router has slots for two SIM cards. For now, we just use the Verizon slot for the Verizon pre-paid plan.
