Verizon unlimited
We are possibly looking at going to unlimited data plans on Verizon. My question is once you hit the limit where they can lower your speed down is it still fast enough to stream? Example we have Dish & sometimes will watch Dish anywhere app that is linked to our S&B Hopper receiver. Would we still be able to watch shows once that data limit is hit or will service be too slow?
Thanks!

Thank you for bringing this topic up!
We are traveling this GREAT Country of ours and have just had fits and a lot of early mornings and late nights trying to find some BANDWIDTH! We have been loyal Verizon customers who own both Apple and Droid hardware. We also just purchased the Verizon JetPack in hopes we can get online...somewhere. Why? My wife posts our Travel Blog www.campingkonneys.wordpress.com almost every day and it has been difficult if not impossible to post large files and pictures to this Blog.
We recently visited the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta and experienced the limited capacity and speed reductions after you reach your plans limit. We have been to several Verizon stores and basically when you reach the 16GB plan you can barely load one picture at a time. They throttle you back to less than a snails pace. It is an unlimited Data plan, but only the first 16GB is truly high speed. You want more high speed service you have to purchase another 16GB JetPack!
Anyone else out there have any better experiences with other service providers? Verizon seems to have the better national coverage we need...but at an increased price for the additional hardware.
The Campgrounds all advertise WIFI but most of them are perform terribly and are not secure.
Thanks

We just converted our Verizon Jet-Pack (at $80 for 15 GB) to the FMCA-offered plan of 25 GB for only $49.99. We thought we would have to terminate our current Jet-Pack (along with termination fees - we've had it for 6 months) and get a new one to start over. But the on-line process seemed to be seamless and allowed us to sign up with our current jet-pack and get this FMCA "discount", making our cost only $49.99 per month AND giving us 25 GB. Yes, it still will be throttled, from what I understand, after the 25 GB is used, but we rarely hit the 15 GB limit before. The cost savings is what got our attention.
We haven't gotten a new bill yet, and haven't reached past our 15 GB limit to ensure that everything updated yet, but we're optimistic, as we also contacted Verizon directly to ensure we did everything correctly.
Took them a while and some research to even find the program and deal, but they said it looked like everything worked properly.
You DO have to be an FMCA member for the past 2 years, or be willing to update your membership to show you are paid for at least 2 years out.

I appreciate the insight. The 2 Verizon plans I was looking at are their new unlimited plans where they limit at 22GB and 75GB depending which plan you choose. Just seeing if we run through that if we would still be able to use our Dish app which it sounds like probably not based on what you experienced. Are you always cut back on speed once reaching limit, or was it just because of location and crowd where you were?

The only true unlimited is T-Mobile. We have Verizon because it's more available, but when you need data or to stream, T-Mobile gets a hats off from me. I've used more than 100gig in one month when I got a new laptop and needed to update my dropbox. It does slow down during some peak times after 50 (fifty gig, not 15) gig per month, but only for a short time. Really Really too bad their service is spotty throughout the US. They have no contracts so I just buy a sim card and plug it into a cheap phone and stick it on the wall near an outlet and use it for a hotspot. I've discontinued my Jetpack too. It's no better than your phone. Verizon says after 15G they slow you to 600k, but I was getting 6K last night after I hit 15G for the month.
There are places where Verizon doesn't work but T-Mobile does, so it's a win win for me.
HTH

We have been using Verizon Unlimited for the last two years while traveling full time. It really depends on the city you are near and how many people are around trying to use data. Forget about streaming during sporting events or rallies. Doesn't work well in crowded campgrounds and also sometimes slows down during the prime TV viewing hours. And all that is before you hit the data limits.
After the first year we bought an AT&T Mobley unlimited plan for about $23 a month in addition to the Verizon plan. Not sure if they are still available. It plugs into the car OBD connector but we bought the AC adapter and taped the mobley to the back of a window blind. So when Verizon doesn't work we used the Mobley. Still seemed like when we most wanted to watch a movie or we sat down to watch Game of Thrones, neither was working well enough to view.
Our final solution was to break down and buy a satellite dish and DVR with DirecTV. We use the the unlimited plans for all our computer needs and an occasional movie. This is working well for us.
Redbox is also available when traveling.

Paul, good to hear from you! It's been almost 2 years since we last saw each other at the Tampa rally along with Bill and his wife. Appreciate the insight. On the road I'm not too concerned when camping as we have Dish satellite for the coach. Mainly this is to address when we are up at our lake house in Michigan for the summer as we are looking at getting rid of internet there as 10 months of the year it's not being used. We would like to see if we could get by with data and hotspot for when I'm working there and kids are using iPads as well as streaming Dish app on our TV since we don't have a fixed satellite Dish at our home there. All 1st world problems I know! I'm just getting tired of dealing with Comcast who keeps raising our internet prices especially only being there a few months through the year.

Brian,
The 22G is if you use your mobile device. If you're using it as a hotspot, it is limited to 15G.
75G? I need to look into that, new to me.

Paul,
I called and they told me the Mobley plan was no longer available.
I didn't know Direct TV had satellite data. How fast is that? Or are you using a hotspot for the data?

Just checked and the BEYOND unlimited plan is 75 gig but only 20 gig as a hotspot. Not a bad deal, 5 gig extra for $10 a month.

Hi fsudelt,
To simply the answer your OP question, the answer is no. Verizon's throttle is so severe one can die for lack of band width. Verizon gets A+ for availability and a F- for this "unlimited" plan that is not useable once the throttle limit is reached.

I’m using a Verizon sim I got on eBay. It’s 170/mo but is truly unlimited. I’ve blown thru at least 300 gig this month and I still get 60 Mbit/s down / 22 up.
I have a detailed post and video in the tech forum here.

Correct we’d be using streaming through our phone to an Apple TV to our TV rather than using hotspot. I’d use hotspot for work but usage would not be more than 15 or 20 I’d think per month
