Hi,

After coming back from being away from the coach for a few weeks, we found a leak in the drain pipe from the kitchen sink... which is in the curb side kitchen slideout. I made this video after completing the repair... and thought other Newmar owners might find it useful to know how the drain line is plumbed when your sink is in a slide.

During the repair, we also found that there was a very small leak in the hot water line to the sink. So that had to be repaired, too.

You can watch the video on Youtube here:
NOW WE KNOW: Kitchen Slide-Out Plumbing - YouTube
I figured it might help other Newmar owners who also have a sink in their slide. Knowledge is power, right?!?!

Interesting video. I had a similar situation on my 03 Winnebago. They fixed it two times under warranty, but it still failed again. I repaired it the third time and it's been good for since 2004.

I made the flex pipe as long as I could fit in the cabinet and used pressure pipe fittings instead of DWV fittings because the collar is much deeper allowing for more contact surface.

Also it's important that you use cement that is intended for flex applications like hot tubs, not regular PVC cement ( it will say so on the can). Finally, for insurance I further secured the joints with three stainless screws through the collar and into the flex, but not penetrating the inside of the flex.

Thanks John for the informative video
Newmar has changed their method of the piping since I had a kitchen slide in a 3765--98 coach.
At that time they had like slip knuckles set up on the ends like a bicycle pedals.
As the slide moved out the knuckles would turn for water lines and the drain line.
The old flex pipe in your set up might have been to stiff and not flexible enough thus braking at welded connection to stationary pipe.
Do not know if you ever ran into other MFG's setups for kitchen slides but they left something to be desired.
When I saw them it made me decide to get a Newmar.
Simple Newmar design but cheaper than what I had on 98 Newmar.
There were 6 slip knuckles in that design.
If your new flex pipe is more flexible it should last longer than the old one.
May think about sending your info THREAD to Newmar to see if maybe future slides may need a change.
ernieh's idea of a slightly longer flex pipe would put less strain on pipe joint connection as long as there is room in that area to do it, which looks like it does.
Your stainless water piping should work well also.

Good video I should have made one, a month ago my new 2011 Newmar had similar problem while extending slide heard a bad noise and upon checking found that the flexible drain line and all the water lines and electrical had gotten caught on a wood brace for cabinet and got kinked. Newmar sent new line and I reinstalled with addition of an aluminium plate to avoid same problem.

Ernie,

We used deeper collar fittings as well... we saw the DWV fittings and shied away from them immediately.

We had the same idea of extending the hose in order to alleviate some stress on the joints and bought a section of flexible PVC that was about a foot longer than the original. It fit just fine in the space, but the way it arched when the slide was extended resulted in the upper portion curving up away from the rest of the plumbing, which meant it wouldn't have drained properly. In the end, the new pipe was a few inches longer than the old... so hopefully that will buy us some more life this time around.

Thanks for the heads up on the flexible PVC cement, too. We didn't know that existed! We used medium weight, standard PVC cement (which appears to be acceptable, too... just looked online at several flexible PVC retailer websites). I'm saving your note, though, so that if/when the new one fails, I'll be reminded to get different cement!

Thanks!

YIKES! So sorry to hear you ran into this on such a new coach! Sounds like someone, somewhere in the assembly process forgot to put in some kind of blocking board/plate. Hope you caught it while it was still under warranty!
