Vote for Slabman or Slabwoman?

I was inspired by Don to provide some storage in the engine compartment. so today I installed a couple brackets and mounted my collapsing ladder up there. After proudly showing the DW my results she brings up the thought of the cover catching fire due to the heat back there. (I hate when they bring up practical stuff like that.)

Sooo....fire or no fire...who are you voting for regarding this issue?

Put a thermometer on the cover and quantify the temperature. If it's too hot don't use the cover.

It doesn't look like it would block air flow...I'm with you. It won't get that hot unless there's a diesel leak fire. You're safe.

I'm thinking if it catches on fire there you problems are bigger then the ladder.

However whats to stop it from sliding to the left and dropping down onto the pulleys creating problems.

John, your eyes are too good. i thought of the same thing, I haven't installed the bungee yet. Also, there is a bulge in the ladder circumference that won't allow horizontal movement, although it isn't apparent in the picture.

I will stick with the wife but if there is enough air movement back there the heat would not build up that much.

Looks OK to me.
On the other hand, I like to avoid the "I told You So" situations.

I would install either a SS-200 AFFF or SS-300 AFFF fire protection system and kill two birds with one stone.

The location is really thinking outside the box. Ladders take up so much space and I hate seeing them bungeed to the back of the coach.

Don't put the cover on the ladder. The ladder will not block much of the air flow through the vents at the back (if there are vents). I did a quick search of the net and could not find any photos of the rear.

Slabman,

I think you're carrying to much other crap if you can't find a place for that little ladder in your Essex!! Looks like Slabwoman has control of the storage bays

Okay.....On mine, I used the dead area above and behind the door opening. If you look at mine with the engine cover open, you can't see where I hid my broom and rake. I'm also hiding my Genturi (in the bag) in the engine compartment. As look in, to the far right behind the taillight is a dead area. I already mounted an aluminum shelf that holds two quarts of oil and two quarts of ATF. The Genturi will stand upright in the corner. This area shouldn't get enough heat to damage the Genturi bag.

I know some laugh at finding storage space, but this 40' Dutch Star has less storage than my 36' Diplomat. I like storage where I can easily access something without removing 10 other things.

I added a shelf over the generator two weeks ago. It holds three wooden tire ramps, (30" long by 4" tall) and the front folding step for when the coach steps are too high.

Oh yeah......Slabwoman sounds like a woman travelling by herself.....maybe she is....Bob may think he owns the coach, but might be just a driver!

Don't get me started on interior space. Between the washer/dryer and dishwasher, some of the major TALL storage is non existent. Even under the bed storage is smaller than my Diplomat. We leave on our first big trip tomorrow. Sooooo.....now I will have to remember where I loaded everything 3 months ago and probably work on some rearranging to make space/convenience.

Do not use a bungie the heat will cause it to soften and stretch. Use a solid buckle strap to secure it. double wrap and tie the end. You will have no way of seeing it come loose until it hits the fan and then it is tooooooo late.
