Water bay on Mountain Aire

For some reason the hose reel base has a lot of rust on the bottom of it. So there must be standing water there.

The two questions I have are:

1. Are others having trouble with standing water in the bay? I see there is a drain hole with a removable rubber plug but that is in the forward part of the bay and not near the hose reel. Also what is the bay made of as there seems to be no rust in the bay itself. AL or plastic?

2. I see the base is available new from the reel company but has anyone refinished theirs?

The motor home is not close at had so that is why I can't just determine the material in the bay.

Thanks

Vinny

It doesn't have to have standing water to cause rust. The water that drains out of the hose after you reel it in is enough to get things damp. That's all it takes.

The bay has a plastic liner in it.

Refinishing it would be no different than refinishing any other piece of rusty metal. Make sure you get all the rust off and remove the factory finish well past the rusted area. Repaint with a high quality marine paint.

Maybe the hose reel connections are leaking when using city water? On mine, when putting the hose away, there is a cap, hooked to the hose that screws into the hose to cap it off during storage and also seals it off keeping small critters out.......

My hose reel came with a white plastic cap for the hose when not in use. I know it easily falls off. When I wind my hose back in, I give it a shake (don't go there) and then cap it. This prevents it from leaking/dripping when not in use.

Thanks everyone.

I'm going to call the reel company and see what the replacement base costs. Otherwise I will remove the unit and wire brush and paint.

Mine has a brass heavy duty cap that I use for all of the reasons stated.

Aren't we supposed to cap our hose before using......just saying.

Seriously - on our 1999 the hose reel swivel connection developed a small leak when on city water. The original ss swivel was upgraded by Reelcraft with a better design which I have since replaced including the white hose. No more problems with the leak path. The new swivel requires a new hose due to the fitting on the end. Did it without removing the reel from the rig and yes I left it a little rusty but now it stays dry. Removing the hose cap is best done outside the bay door.
