Here's my question for the group. As we travel, I have turned off both Electric and Gas Water Heater switches. Have reset the gas switch. When we arrive at end of day our water is HOT. I've listened for the gas heater to fire up but have not heard a thing. What's going on?? Can I disable the gas part of the heater?? What do you all think?

Hello Mercerc44, in the DP your engine assist hot water heats your water while you travel. The water circulates somehow through the engine block and heats the water. It has nothing to do the gas or electric heaters. Makes it nice to have hot water while you travel. Great feature to have. Enjoy!

I'm going to check, but I don't think my DSDP has engine assist hot water. But I was wrong once before. Made several trips from Mich to Florida and never notice that I had hot water when stopping for the night.

I would agree with Larry. Sounds like you do have the assist heat. Most '04's did I believe.

If you had the water heater on and turned it off just before leaving, it could be that the water has just remained hot. Nothing is trying to keep it hot. I have done this myself. Turned the heater off and at the end of the day of traveling the water is still hot. It's just because it's insulated well and does not cool down as fast as you would think.

Just my thoughts though.

I think Shaun has it right...
AquaHot/Oasis (aka hydronic) systems have the motor-aide engine heat assist. They have the internal plumbing means to do it and they also built to be able to heat the engine. I would be surprised if a propane "tank type" hot water heater has such a feature as I have not seen an RV unit with the internal heater plumbing to do it.

You do not have to have hydronic heating to have the engine assist heat. Our 03 DSDP had propane & electric heat and it also had the engine assist hot water. Take a look at your options sheet and see if it says anything about engine assist heat.

Thanks to all. We have been traveling a great deal and when we settle down for a few days will check all my info from Newmar. Heading, in a round about way, to Albuq. NM for the Balloon Fiesta with Newmar.
Thanks again

Just some additional info. Our 2000 DSDP has the factory installed engine assisted heating system. We like it, but sometimes I forget to turn the propane/electric back on after traveling and I hear about it when she tries to take a shower the next am!!!

Our 2004 DSDP has the engine assist hot water. When I take a shower, the night after driving, the water seems to be a lot hotter then the electric or the LP gets it.
