What Filter?

We're slowly working our way through our new to us coach and have tackled the water filters today. I'm ordering all new filters (can't believe the $$!! ). I have the info for the drinking water filter & the fridge filter but when we unscrewed the main filter housing in the bay where the water connections are there was no filter in it. I can't find anywhere on the housing or in any documentation that gives the model number for the filter.

Is there a standard filter?

Should I just find one that will fit in the housing?

Thanks!

I think for the main water filter in the water bay, you can find a filter at either Lowe's, Home Depot, or even WalMart. These are pretty standard filters and there are several types of elements you can use in them. I use 2 of the filters, the 1st would be a particulate filter and the 2nd is a charcoal filter to improve the taste of the water.

I purchase our refrigerator filters on eBay for quite a bit less than I can find them elsewhere. They are always sealed and new.

Hope this helps.....burfurd

There's also www.waterfiltersonline.com I have 5 filters mainly because of our RO system. I usually get a years worth when I place my order. I'm pretty sure that the outside filter you're asking about is a: Osmonics PX-5-978 5 Micron Purtex Sediment Filter-Poly Spun. To double check I'd just do a google search on the one I showed you.

The filters I use in my 2005 DS in the wet bay is the MAXVOC-975 and which fits the standard 10" filter housing for 2 1/2" to 2 7/8" OD Cartridges (.5 micron nominal Filtration). I bought my first from Pure Flo on-line for around $30 but buy now from Camping world for around 20-$25. Hope that helps.

Thanks!

I've ordered the filters. I found the MAXVOC-975 on Amazon for $22.53. That looks more like the one we used with the G'town.

Now..we'd better have sparkling clear good tasting water & ice.

Sorry I missed posting a reply before. Filters fast.com is one that I found a couple years ago for things at the house and recently found they had the max voc. The reason I purchased from them is because their shipping cost is always lower than anyone else and they also win at the price level as well. In addition I find they often offer a generic compatible filter compared to oem.

We have found as we travel around the country that water quality varies widely. Some areas have lots of Sulfur and others just taste terrible. This led us to finally install a whole house RO (Reverse Osmosis) system. Now everything in the RV runs off ROed water. I even wash the RV with it, as I don't have to dry it.

Don't forget to disinfect the water system from time to time. Especially if you have a Carbon Filter prior to the water tank. The carbon removes the chlorine which acts as a disinfectant.

Hopefully the filter canister is clear so you can "see" how dirty your filter is. I just had a big surprise, finding my primary filter VERY dirty. I soon found out the campground had a broken water line and apparently they didn't flush the system adequately. Moral of this story is: you never really know what's in the water delivered to your coach. Having a clear filter canister at least allows you to see what's been trapped by the filter.

Ditto on the clear filter housing. I also run the water BEFORE I hook up to the coach. You don't know how long it's been since water was run through that particular site.

Ditto Filterfast.com. We've used them for years. However, if you know the filter part number by simply doing a Google search can result in some amazing prices.

After the campground incident, I needed new pre-filters for our RO system. I use the Purtrex PX01-9-7/8 which is a 1 micron filter that's 9-7/8" tall and 2" in diameter. This fits the standard Newmar filter canister.

So I simply Googled "px01-9-7/8" and found them for $2.20 each. I also ordered the 5 micron and they were $2.00 each. So I ordered 10 of each and shipping was $13. So that added $0.65. This is way less expensive than Home Depot or Camping World. Then I Googled the RO Membranes part number, that I have paid as much as $65 for and found the exact membrane for $27 from a different supplier.

The moral of this story is that Google is your friend.

We were at Menard's (home improvement store) yesterday and I was looking at filters and found an "RV filter" that has a short hose that connects the canister to the hydrant then the RV water hose connects to the filter and to the RV. It's a carbon filter but is only rated for 20 microns. I took a chance on it and thought we'd try it as sort of a "pre-filter". The next filter our water goes through is a 10 micron and there is another filter for the drinking water and a separate filter in the fridge for the ice maker.

I like the idea of a clear canister in the wet bay so we can monitor the yuck it collects. I suppose that will be my next purchase. I didn't think about it or I would have taken it so I could match it.

Thanks for all of the good info and links!

Don't get to filter happy as you will notice a reduction in flow/pressure at some point.

Just make sure the clear canister does not see daylight. Otherwise you will see algae grow pretty quickly turning your clear canister a nice shade of green.

Good point. I think the bath & sink will only have 2 filters. The one I got to attach to the hose & the canister in the wet bay.

There is a drinking water faucet which is separate from the sink faucet that has a filter & there is another in the fridge for the ice maker. After crawling around under the sink, I think the water to the fridge also goes through the same filter as the drinking water.

We always used a pressure regulator too.

Bleh. Maybe I'll keep the solid color.

In most instances the canister is housed in the wet bay, away from any sunlight. I have seen the free standing ones, and if I had one of those it would be the non-clear kind.
